Nuclear Medicine Technologist

A Nuclear Medicine Technologist operates high-tech medical equipment used in the diagnosis of many diseases and injuries. They utilize gamma cameras to attain functional images and process the image data using computers. They also prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals and perform certain non-imaging studies as necessary, occasionally assisting with some radiotherapy procedures. In addition to working with complex apparatus, nuclear medicine technologists also spend a substantial amount of time working with people. Patients may be under considerable physical and mental stress, but technologists need to treat each person with professional care. Nuclear medicine technologists must be able to communicate with patients to get the right medical information needed for an accurate diagnosis.
A caregiver in this position works 8:00AM – 4:30PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Perform elution of 99mTc generators, prepare radiopharmaceuticals and ensure compliance with regulations and recommendations by state/federal regulatory and accreditation agencies.
Perform hot lab responsibilities, which may include elutions of generator according to prescribed procedure and manufacturer specifications using aseptic technique.
Perform elute quality control using aseptic technique.
Perform radiopharmaceuticals kit preparations and quality control according to departmental procedure and manufacturer specifications using aseptic techniques.
Label and record required documentation according to department procedures.
Administer radiopharmaceuticals according to department protocol using aseptic technique in compliance with state/federal regulations and accreditation agencies.
Ascertain correct patient, study and radiopharmaceuticals by checking patient ID, requisitions and radiopharmaceuticals label prior to radiopharmaceutical administration.
Properly record pharmaceuticals.
Educate patients regarding procedures, equipment and exams to ensure understanding and cooperation.
Ensures patient safety during and after exams.
Assist with scheduling patients as needed.
Perform venipuncture as necessary and maintain competencies.
Perform quality control and quality assurance procedures.
Perform daily, weekly, quarterly and annual procedures on the following instrumentation: dose calibrators, scintillation well counter and thyroid probe, and scintillation cameras.
Identify, document and report sub-optimum results to supervisor.
Adhere to Department of Health, TJC, and department regulations governing performance of above procedures.
Maintain required record keeping and documentation for all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Acquire, archive, transmit and print images via PACS.
Complete after-hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork.
Process billing via RIS.
Perform nuclear imaging/counting procedures according to department protocols and computer acquisition and analysis.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Bachelor’s degree in nuclear medicine OR graduate of a two-year accredited school in an allied health program OR certification from a CAHEA approved Nuclear Medicine Technologist training program.
Registered Technologist credentialed by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, R.T(N) (ARRT), in good standing OR be a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) through the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board.
Current state licensure (RL).
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
One year of experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
