About the Job
Red Hat is the world’s leading provider of enterprise open source software solutions, using a community-powered approach to deliver reliable and high-performing Linux, hybrid cloud, container, and Kubernetes technologies. We strive to make software freely accessible to everyone around the world. Software developed at Red Hat runs in vehicles that landed on the moon, airlines, banks, trains, social media, health care, academic institutions, robots, and in many other places.

The Red Hat Performance and Scale team is looking for a highly motivated Software Engineer to join us, focusing on the future of automation: Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, Ansible Lightspeed, and our next-generation AI-powered automation solutions. In this role, you will test and characterize the performance of complex, distributed systems, as well as contribute back to product software with feature ideas, bug fixes, and architectural changes to ensure our solutions scale to meet customer demand.

In this role, you will work in an environment where diverse perspectives are invited, the best ideas are valued, and people feel empowered to contribute. Freedom and courage are two of our core values, which is why you’ll need to be comfortable taking risks and exploring the unknown. But being a Red Hatter isn't just about being brave, it's also about demonstrating commitment and sticking to it. We can offer you professional development, social engagement and networking, performance and development, and meaningful work throughout your tenure at Red Hat.

What You Will Do

  • Collaborate with product management and engineering teams to define, document, and validate performance KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and SLOs (Service Level Objectives) for new and existing features.

  • Develop comprehensive performance test plans based on defined KPIs, scale targets (e.g., 10,000 managed hosts, 500 concurrent users), and scaling factors (e.g., host count, simultaneous jobs).

  • Design and implement tests to analyze and characterize the performance of services, focusing on distinguishing performance bottlenecks at different layers (e.g., application latency vs. model inference time vs. network overhead).

  • Develop and maintain automated tools and frameworks for load generation, test environment deployment (on Kubernetes/OpenShift), and execution of performance tests

  • Automate the collection, analysis, and visualization of monitoring data, logs, and traces to characterize performance and identify regressions.

  • Work closely with software developers to triage, debug, and resolve performance issues, influencing architectural impact decisions (e.g., database query optimization, microservice communication, caching strategies).

  • Identify scale-related issues proactively and work with engineering and SRE teams to implement resolutions.

  • Develop self-service automation and provide performance consultation to development teams, enabling them to understand the performance impact of their changes early in the development cycle.

What You Will Bring

  • 2+ years of experience writing or testing software

  • Experience with UNIX or Linux operating systems (any distribution)

  • Experience with container orchestration software (such as Kubernetes or OpenShift)

  • Experience with test data visualization and analysis

  • Coding experience in languages like Python or Go

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

The following are considered a plus:

  • A degree in engineering, computer science, or equivalent experience

  • Experience with automation of software deployment and testing

  • Experience with observability tools such as Prometheus and Grafana

  • Knowledge of Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform

  • Experience developing or testing of AI/ML-based systems or services that consume them.

  • Understanding of distributed systems
