About the Team
The Directed Spend team within Walmart’s Transaction Systems portfolio powers how millions of customers use their EBT, SNAP, WIC, and Wellness benefits. We build the intelligence that determines benefit eligibility in real time, helps customers identify what they can purchase, and drives incremental revenue for the business by guiding customers toward qualified, wellness focused products. This is a mission critical engineering team operating at massive scale, designing and running highly reliable Java based backend systems that integrate deeply with Payments, Eligibility, Catalog, Compliance, and ML driven decisioning across Walmart’s global ecosystem.
What you'll do
• Design, build, and enhance Java based backend services for Directed Spend systems.
• Write efficient, scalable, and maintainable code that operates at Walmart scale across millions of transactions.
• Take end to end ownership of stories — from requirement analysis, development, testing, deployment, and production monitoring.
• Convert business needs into high quality technical designs, including HLD to detailed design (logic flows, pseudo code, mock screens).
• Implement and extend CI/CD, automation, telemetry, observability, and secure coding practices.
• Conduct unit, component, integration, and regression testing to ensure high system reliability.
• Support production systems through monitoring, analysis, troubleshooting, and participate in on call as needed.
• Analyze logs, operational metrics, and telemetry to proactively identify improvements and performance bottlenecks.
• Continuously research and adopt emerging technologies, engineering patterns, and best practices to improve the platform.
• Ensure compliance with company policies, security standards, values, and engineering excellence guidelines.
What you'll bring
• Minimum of 5 years of strong Java backend development experience, including Core Java and Spring/Spring Boot.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems, microservices, REST APIs, and cloud native architectures.
• Hands on experience with SQL/NoSQL databases, caching systems, and event-driven technologies such as Kafka.
• Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines, Git, build tools, automation, and DevOps engineering practices.
• Experience with various testing methodologies — unit, integration, regression — and a solid grasp of code/test coverage.
• Proven ability to debug, analyze, and resolve complex issues in high-scale, high-availability systems.
• Knowledge of telemetry, observability, monitoring, and performance tuning for backend services.
• Ability to convert business requirements into technical designs and anticipate risks early.
• Fast learner with adaptability to new tools, frameworks, and technologies.
• High sense of ownership, accountability, and commitment to engineering excellence.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with product, architecture, ML, and cross-functional partners.
