The Opportunity

Exciting opportunity for a Principal to join our Private Asset Advisory team! As Principal, you will be responsible for assisting in deal risk assessment, portfolio monitoring and providing guidance from a total fund level, as well as developing and fostering relationships across all private portfolios within the fund.  You will also be collaborating with peers across Risk and private investment groups for new and existing Investment Committee and Board deliverables. This will require a combination of technical, analytical and organizational skills. The Principal must also have strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills in order to articulate ideas, issues and recommendations internally. Attention to detail and a drive to improve existing processes are desired.

Who you’ll work with

This role report to the Managing Director, Private Assets Advisory, Risk. You will be working directly with deal teams in Equities, Infrastructure & Natural Resources, Teachers’ Venture Growth with an emphasis on Real Estate across all global regions including the Americas, EMEA and APAC. You will also be working with other groups in Risk such as Risk Modelling and Policy, as well as other functional groups outside of Risk such as Responsible Investing, Finance, Valuations, Tax, and Legal.

What you’ll do

  • Independently evaluate the qualitative risks of private investments while incorporating “real world” considerations into analysis and recommendations

  • Provide guidance to investment teams on policy, governance, limits, benchmarking, and risk modelling

  • Develop relationships with key partners while maintaining an independent assessment of risks

  • Work directly with individual deal teams to understand risks of individual deals and discuss with the Managing Director and Director, Private Asset Advisory before Investment Committee meetings.

  • Assist on the development of monitoring and modelling frameworks to capture the risk return characteristics of various asset classes and individual investments in the private portfolios.

  • Work cross functionally with teams to support benchmark recommendations, organizational strategy and enterprise planning.

  • Prepare presentations on ongoing and ad hoc cross fund private market analysis to the Investment Committee and Board of Directors

  • Work cross-functionally with other teams to ensure continued alignment with OTPP’s mission, vision and values. This includes supporting and sharing knowledge with other areas of Risk responding to ad hoc requests from senior management, and partnering with colleagues in Real Estate in particular, but also includes Equities, Infrastructure, Natural Resources , and Teachers’ Venture Growth.

  • Support the development and mentorship of junior members of the team

What you’ll need

  • Minimum of Undergraduate degree in relevant discipline such as Finance, Economics, Commerce, etc.

  • A professional designation, such as CFA, CBV, CA, or CAIA, would be considered an asset.

  • 5+ years of progressive experience including the following:

    • Transactional and valuation experience in real estate investments (commercial/residential/industrial developments), and/or private investments and familiarity with private asset financial and LBO models at a private equity firm

    • Tier 1 financial institution (M&A/corporate development)

    • Professional services firm (consulting, transactional services, valuations).

  • Understanding of the financial markets, valuation and capital structuring for a broad range of assets, including LBOs, venture capital/pre-IPO, infrastructure and natural resources.

  • Strong communication and written skills, strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated presentation skills.

  • Perform effectively in a team-oriented environment

  • Advance knowledge of excel and macros would be considered an asset

  • Understanding of real estate international markets would be considered an asset

  • Ability to conduct independent work with minimal direct supervision
