The AEL Summer Internship Program offers an immersive real-world experience, closely replicating the career journey of an American Equity professional. Each intern will contribute to meaningful, hands-on projects that drive measurable business outcomes, gaining valuable experience along the way.

Interns will also have the opportunity to present their project work to company leaders, network with executives, and participate in educational programs designed to support their personal and professional growth. Additionally, interns will engage in community service projects and social events, building connections with fellow interns and the broader American Equity team.

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:   

The Investment Accounting Intern works with the Investment Accounting Team to assist in the daily, monthly and quarterly accounting duties such as the preparation of reconciliations, journal entries, financial analysis, and internal and external reporting for the Company’s investments. This intern will gain a broad knowledge of accounting principles through hands on training and projects related to investments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Duties involve collaborating with others as well as working independently and may include the following:

• Prepares and posts journal entries and supporting documentation.
• Assists with the monthly and quarterly fixed maturity, equity and private asset securities accounting and reporting, including journal entry activity and reconciliations.
• Completes and distributes quarterly STAT & GAAP Investment Disclosures.
• Assists in providing necessary information, reports and analysis for internal/external auditors and tax specialists.
• Contributes to automation and continuous improvement projects.
• Performs ad hoc reporting and other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:  

Actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting or other related field of study.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS:

None required for this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:   

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to successfully handle pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
• Ability to work cooperatively and successfully with employees, customers, and other outside third parties.
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite particularly in Excel.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Strong attention to numeric and other detail; ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply to practical situations.
• Strong organizational and planning skills.
