The Cross Connection Control Program is responsible for protecting the city’s drinking water supply by preventing contamination from backflow events. The program ensures that proper backflow prevention assemblies are installed and maintained across businesses and residences to keep our water system safe.

Provo City is seeking a motivated individual who enjoys working independently and making a real impact to perform as a part-time Cross Connection Control Worker. In this role, you’ll have the flexibility to manage your schedule, gain valuable experience in the field, and contribute to a program that directly benefits public health.

This position involves public interaction, delivering compliance notices, conducting hazard assessments, and documenting findings to ensure that all cross connections are protected according to city requirements. What is the compensation?

Pay Rate: $20.00 to $22.00 per hour, depending on qualifications.

What will I do?

  • Visit businesses to schedule and conduct backflow hazard assessments, determining required backflow prevention measures.

  • Deliver non-compliance notices to customers not meeting backflow prevention requirements.

  • Take photos of unprotected cross connections and document findings.

  • Update backflow preventer data and upload photos to the online backflow tracking system.

  • Set up appointments and manage your schedule efficiently, ensuring time is used effectively.

  • Communicate with the public, occasionally handling confrontational situations with professionalism and calmness.

What do I need to apply?

  • Comfortable interacting with the public and visiting various businesses.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Prepared to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.

  • Proficiency with basic computer software for updating records and uploading photos.

  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

  • Organizational skills and ability to take detailed, accurate notes while onsite.

  • Provo City will provide training for the following items if needed:

  • Ability to identify cross connection hazards and understand basic backflow prevention solutions.

  • Basic plumbing knowledge is preferred.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in backflow prevention fields (tester or administrator).

  • Familiarity with cross connection control programs and backflow testing is a plus.

What are the physical and environmental factors?

This position involves working both inside and out of doors in a variety of weather conditions. This role will include interacting with members of the public in potentially confrontational, uncomfortable, or stressful situations.

What are the hours?

Flexible schedule, 20–25 hours per week between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday - Thursday. Actual schedule to be decided by the manager and employee.

What is the selection process?

Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted, with the first screening being held on October 10, 2024. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.

If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
