The RN (Registered Nurse)- Critical Care Transport, provides emergency and critical care services during rotor, fixed wing, and surface transport, including mobile stroke, under direction of the nurse practitioner/physician, to referring and receiving facilities and/or agencies.  During the course of an assigned shift the transport RN is responsible to the on duty nurse practitioner for triage and deployment of medical management strategies and prescribed therapies.

Responsibilities:

  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the care of individuals and documents responses of prescribed therapies of patients under their care during the various phases of transport.
  • Demonstrates clinical proficiency in the management of critically ill and injured patients, though ongoing evaluation, case review and in-service training.
  • Incorporates the understanding of flight physiology, environmental influence and limitations of unstructured environments in the plan of care.
  • Communicates with medical control nurse practitioner/physician for patient care issues and management strategies.
  • Maintains self, equipment, vehicles and aircraft in a mission ready state at all times, immediately after the completion of each mission.
  • Participates in the triage of patients and the assignment of appropriate modes of transport, with nurse practitioner oversight when assigned as the clinical coordinator.
  • Participates in educational advancement and courses that are self directed or as requested by the leadership including public relations activities as assigned.

Education:

  • BSN preferred. Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing.

Certifications:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Newborn Resuscitation Program (NRP) required within 6 months of hire.
  • A Transport-specific National Certification: Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN), Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN), or Certified Neonate Pediatric Transport (C-NPT) is required within 2 years of hire.
  • TNCC Trauma Nurse Critical Care (TNCC) or International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) with supplemental training course required within 1 year of hire.
  • Passport required for entry to Canada and international transports. Passport required to obtain within 1 year of hire date.
  • For Pediatric RNs STABLE (Sugar, temperature, airway, blood pressure, lab work and emotional support) certification required within 1 year of hire.

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum three years or 4,000 hours of RN experience in a Critical Care environment (e.g., Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department).
  • Critical Care experience must include ventilator management and invasive hemodynamic monitoring, including, but not limited to, transvenous pacers, central venous lines and arterial lines.
  • Three years full-time paramedic experience with an accredited critical care transport program will equal one year of RN critical care experience for the purposes of the Medic-RN bridge.  Paramedic experience needs to include at least 50% flight experience. 
  • Pediatric experience required for pediatric specialty team positions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform in limited quarters, ground and air transport modes and in all types of terrain and weather conditions. Frequent bending, twisting, climbing steps or ladders, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Medium Work - exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for light work.
  • Passport required within 1 year of hire date.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
