Job Description

Essential Job Functions:

Area Specific Job Accountabilities:

  • Wraps, seals, and labels articles for identification, sterilization, and distribution.

  • Decontaminates and cleans equipment according to established guidelines and policies.

  • Inspects instruments for proper working condition and identifies items for repair.

  • Assembles and accounts for all instruments trays requiring a tray listing.

  • Monitors sterilizers by checking indicators and charts to ensure proper functioning and processing of the sterilizer units.

  • Logs data pertaining to the biological and chemical indicators in relation to the sterilizer operations and according to the established Lurie Children’s policies.

  • Completes duties associated with the soiled utility rounds and assists where needed with a situation requiring immediate attention.

  • Adheres to established guidelines and procedures of Lurie Children’s and ensures a clean, organized and safe work environment in compliance with OSHA standards.

  • Coordinates routine activities between surgical suite personnel to include adjustments to schedules.

  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of pertinent aspects and competency with protocols related to the use of chemical disinfection, high level disinfection, and sterilization if required as part of the responsibilities of the role. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of related work experience preferred in healthcare setting.

  • Requires successful completion of the established in-house training program within six months of hire.

  • Ability to foster a team approach in daily work activities and demonstrates independent judgment when addressing nursing/physicians staff concerns.

  • Demonstrated analytical ability to monitor and interpret surgical procedure terminology and correlating physician preferences.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills necessary to address general trouble shooting situations.
  • Demonstrated the ability to lead employees in a productive manner consistent with the goal of the department. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other medical staff personnel and the public.
  • Ability to provide and follow oral and written instructions and procedures.
