Job Description

Job Title: Junior DevOps Engineer

Reports to: Senior DevOps Engineer

Primary Responsibilities: The Junior DevOps Engineer’s primary responsibility is to troubleshoot, maintain, and improve upon our AWS infrastructure. The DevOps engineer engages with the software engineering teams, technical delivery teams, and vendors to ensure the successful design, development, and delivery of secure, scalable, infrastructure solutions.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Reading comprehension: This job requires the ability to read and extract solutions from product documentation, both externally hosted and internal.
  • 1-2 years of related work experience in software development, Devops, or site reliability engineering.
  • 1-2 years of related experience working with AWS.
  • Proficiency in at least 1 modern scripting language (Python, Bash, Node.js, Go, etc). 
  • Experience in at least 1 Infrastructure-as-code language (Terraform, Pulumi, CDK, etc).
  • Familiarity with git or VCS system.
  • Familiarity with a build management system, such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Gitlab CI, etc.
  • Familiarity with core AWS services such as IAM roles & policies, security groups, s3, etc.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to assume and complete assignments independently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of executives, managers, and subject matter experts.
  • Comfortable using terminal based linux distributions such as Ubuntu server and Amazon Linux.
  • Experience working with container-based architectures using Docker.
  • The position is located in Charleston, SC. The ability to work from home is permitted for this role.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Build Pipelines: Maintain and improve the build pipelines hosted in GitHub Actions.
  • DNS: Purchase and configure domains through Cloudflare to support marketing and other technical initiatives.
  • Deploy: Configure new microservices for use in AWS using our IaC tooling.
  • Troubleshoot and fix misbehaving cloud services.
  • Participate in a Kanban like Agile environment.
  • Assist with user access requests by updating IAM policies and roles.
  • Debug and improve local development workflows.
  • Support Data-Engineering efforts by upgrading, configuring, and maintaining the Airflow clusters for ETL processes.
  • Support Data-Science efforts by deploying and configuring scaling for our machine learning models running on Fargate and Sagemaker.
  • Improve and maintain existing cloud infrastructure through updates and improvements to scaling configurations.
  • An eagerness to learn and dive-in to unknown technologies, to discover and implement correct, scalable, and secure solutions.

  • Must be able to work in a high-pressure team environment, handle multiple tasks and react quickly to software problems and issues.

Physical Requirements

  • Capable of working extended hours, to include evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary.
  • Must be able to speak English in a clear and understandable voice so that various types of communications may be conducted with people of various levels of education and capabilities, to include the exchange and receipt of information over the telephone.
  • Able to see well enough to read faint or partially obscured writing or printing, with corrective lenses if needed.
  • Position may involve sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, shoving, lifting, carrying and moving objects that can weigh up to 25 lbs. This movement can occur throughout the day. Must also be able to climb several flights of stairs if necessary.
  • Must be able to interact with all types of individuals, be mentally alert, detail oriented, and with good reasoning skills.
  • Must have finger dexterity for typing/using a keyboard.

  • Must be able to work on more than one assignment at a time with frequent interruptions, changes and delays. Must be able to remain focused and work effectively, efficiently, and cheerfully under such circumstances. For safety reasons, employee must remain alert to working conditions and aware of safety, health, and environmental concerns.
  • Must be able to work effectively and cheerfully in an environment which may be stressful due to adversarial situations resulting from the proper performance of duties.
