About the team and the role:

eBay is seeking a highly skilled, nimble and collaborative professional to serve as Director, Commercial Counsel, Payments supporting our thriving payments platform and complex financial partnerships! You will be responsible for drafting and negotiating a wide variety of contracts related to strategic payments partnerships, new financial product offerings, and other commercial matters. You will also advise clients on the various legal risks, business strategies and other issues related to commercial transactions. What you will accomplish:

  • Draft, negotiate and advise on complex, multifaceted agreements relating to payments, ecommerce, and other financial services products

  • Drive continuous improvements, scalability and operational excellence in the contract negotiation processes and execution, effectively collaborating with subject matter experts and ensuring that contracts are completed a timely basis and with acceptable deal parameters

  • Provide strategic legal and business advice to facilitate long-term relationships with key partners

  • Manage numerous projects simultaneously under deadline pressure

What you will bring:

  • Good knowledge of regulatory requirements associated with payments and financial services

  • Strong interest in alternative payments, emerging payments technology, and the FinTech industry

  • J.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) and membership in at least one US state bar

  • 10+ years of commercial legal experience preferably in the FinTech space, including in-house experience with payments matters in the context of internet or technology companies and/or relevant law firm work

  • Experience drafting and negotiating commercial agreements with a variety of partners in the payments and financial services industry, including payment networks, card issuers, credit providers, acquirers/processors and financial institutions

  • Experience working closely with business development and product teams on key commercial partnerships to ensure they align with company objectives and product roadmaps

  • Technical understanding of the payments and financial ecosystem, especially as relevant to marketplaces

  • Experience managing high deal volume on deadlines with minimal supervision

  • Familiarity with card networks and their operating rules

  • Sound legal judgment and experience solving problems in a practical manner

  • In-house legal department experience.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment in California, Washington, or New York is expected in the range below.

$160,400 - $254,100

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.

If hired, employees will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
