JOB SUMMARY
The Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) is responsible for leading and overseeing the administration of Marymount University's Sponsored Research Program. This role supports the university’s mission and vision by fostering the growth of its research and training portfolio, with the goal of achieving R2 institution status. The Director will manage a large and diverse grants portfolio, develop policies and procedures for audits to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, and provide fiscal oversight for all grant-related activities. The Director will work closely with the Vice President of Research, who has supervisory responsibility for the Office of Sponsored Research. In addition, the director will collaborate closely with faculty, staff, and external partners, the OSP Director will play a key role in advancing the university's research mission while ensuring financial integrity and operational excellence.
Salary range: $130,000 - $145,000 (commensurate with experience and qualifications)
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Leadership and Oversight:
Provide visionary leadership for the Office of Sponsored Programs, setting strategic priorities to enhance grant funding and research capacity.
Oversee the administration and compliance of a large and complex portfolio of grants and contracts, ensuring alignment with university policies and regulatory requirements.
Develop, implement, and refine policies and procedures to optimize the processes for grant submission, management, and reporting
2. Grant Administration and Fiscal Management:
Oversees OSP pre-award to post-award processes, including proposal development, budget creation, grants submission and financial reporting.
Ensure the proper allocation and monitoring of grant funds in compliance with federal, state, and sponsor regulations
Provide comprehensive financial oversight of sponsored research activities, including audits, reconciliations, and risk assessments to maintain financial integrity.
3. Faculty and Institutional Support:
Act as the primary liaison between faculty, staff, and the Office of Sponsored Programs, supporting grant-seeking efforts and promoting research initiatives.
Develop and deliver training programs to educate faculty and staff on grant administration, compliance requirements, and financial management practices.
Provide personalized guidance to faculty on navigating complex funding opportunities and managing award requirements effectively.
4. Collaboration and Strategic Initiatives:
Collaborate with the university’s leadership team, including the Provost, Deans, and Department Chairs, to align research goals with institutional priorities.
Cultivate and sustain partnerships with federal, state, and private funding agencies to strengthen external support for research activities.
Support new initiatives to secure funding for large-scale, interdisciplinary projects.
5. Compliance and Reporting:
Directly report to and maintain regular meetings, communications, and updates with the Vice President of Research.
Oversee compliance with all grant-related regulations, including those set by federal agencies such as NIH, NSF, and HRSA.
Monitor and ensure internal controls are in place, providing regular updates to university leadership on grant performance, compliance, and any emerging issues.
OTHER DUTIES AND ASSIGNMENTS
Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and innovation within the Office of Sponsored Programs.
Analyze grant funding trends and data to inform strategic decision-making.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Research.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education:
Master’s degree in finance, business administration, public administration, or a related field.
Experience:
A minimum of five years of experience leading an office or team focused on sponsored programs or research administration.
Minimum of five years of experience in grants administration and management, with a focus on pre-award and post-award activities.
Demonstrated expertise in overseeing large grants portfolios and managing complex financial operations.
Licenses or Certifications:
Certified Research Administrator (CRA) or equivalent credential preferred.
Financial Responsibility:
Oversee a significant grants portfolio and manage department budgets according to university policies and sponsor requirements.
Supervision:
Directly manage a team of grants administrators and support staff, providing coaching, performance evaluations, and professional development opportunities.
Special Knowledge
Proficiency with grants management systems, specifically the Workday platform, and familiarity with similar workflow software used for grant administration and financial tracking.
In-depth knowledge of federal grant regulations, including Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200).
Strong analytical and technical skills, with the ability to manage and streamline grant workflows effectively.
Expertise in creating and managing reports, monitoring budgets, and ensuring compliance using grants management software.
