Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a Load Serving Operator (LSO) Trainee to join our team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. What does a Load Serving Operator Trainee do for us?

Under direct supervision, this individual may assume responsibility for the safe, efficient, reliable, and secure operation of the Idaho Power Company transmission system and generation resources. This includes coordinating operation of combustion turbine, hydro, wind, solar, geothermal, and coal fired thermal power plants. Additionally, this position is intended to provide a career path to the LSO-Generation Dispatcher, LSO-Balancing, LSO-Interchange and LSO-Reliability Operator classifications. Progression through the job families is required. The successful candidate will be cross trained on the desks of Generation Dispatcher, Transmission Scheduling, Balancing Authority, and System Transmission Operations.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

Knowledge of:

  • Basic electrical theory, mathematics, and utility systems operation
  • Function and operating characteristics for transmission lines and substation equipment
  • Departmental equipment and computer systems including Energy Management Systems, SCADA, and Idaho Power Company Safety standards

Preferred:

  • Electric transmission system operation

Skills in:

  • Oral and written communication
  • Basic personal computer software applications

Preferred:

  • Advanced PC application skills

Ability to:

  • Accept a high degree of responsibility
  • Function effectively under pressure
  • Understand, retain, and utilize information regarding the status, characteristics, and capacities of transmission equipment
  • Perform well in a rotating shift schedule
  • Work well in a team environment that requires each team member to be a highly self-motivated, active participant


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED including basic math and electrical theory classes

Preferred:

  • Advanced math and electrical theory classes

Experience:

  • 3 years of experience in transmission, distribution, power plant, power utility operations or related area

Preferred:

  • 3 years of experience in Grid Control Center/Generation Dispatch operation experience

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Will be required to pass the NERC System Operator Certification exam within 6 months of hire date

Preferred:

  • NERC certification

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment, fine motor skills including typing on the computer, dialing phones, filing paper, and working in close proximity to other people. There may be occasional lifts of no more than 10 lbs. This position requires the ability to perform well in a rotating shift schedule and the ability to concentrate intensely for periods of 30 minutes to one hour. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate for this position will be required to complete scheduled compliance training and submit to periodic background investigations as mandated by NERC.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Job may require occasional overnight travel. Includes completing written courses, attending classroom training, and receiving on-the-job training in power system operation and control. Job may require substantial home study for some applicants depending on familiarity with application of NERC Standards and testing ability.
