The Applied AI team at Databricks sits at the forefront of advancing GenAI-powered products. Over the past years, we’ve launched Databricks Assistant and AI/BI Genie working with product teams, and made significant strides in using LLM for these products. These products are used by 100s of thousands of Databricks users every day. We are tackling challenging problems like code suggestion, error detection and correction, text-to-sql generation, automatic pipeline generation, knowledge QA and many others.

As our GenAI products continue to evolve, we are looking to hire an Engineering Manager to manage the backend platform which powers these products. This is a brand new stack powering areas like prompt engineering, evaluation harness, calls to multiple LLMs, logging, telemetry and experimentation in order to enable fast build out in this rapidly evolving space. This stack also seamlessly handles scale, cost, compliance and security.  In 2025, we will focus on strengthening the platform architecture to make it scalable for mature features and at the same time be able to expand to new use cases.

In this role, you will work closely with leaders across the company, within engineering, as well as with product management, field engineering, recruiting and HR. You will be responsible for ensuring sustained hiring of the highest quality talent, organizational design and alignment with peer/partner teams within and outside engineering and robust processes for efficient execution against product strategy.

The impact you'll have:

  • You will shape the direction of our GenAI/ML backend stack aka Assistant Platform that directly impacts the capabilities and performance of Databricks' products and services (e.g., Databricks Assistant and AI/BI Genie).
  • You will oversee the recruitment and development of top-tier talent to build a cohesive and dynamic engineering team.
  • You will foster leadership within the team through coaching, and providing growth opportunities.
  • You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including AI researchers, ML engineers, and product teams, to deliver impactful AI solutions that enhance user productivity and satisfaction.
  • You will help evolve the organizational structure to support long-term plans and establish frameworks.

What we look for:

  • BS (or higher) in Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 5 years of experience as an IC and 2 years of Engineering Management experience.
  • Experience with large-scale distributed web services and the processes around testing, monitoring, and SLAs.
  • Experience working with partner teams (e.g. Product or ML) that utilize the platform to develop innovative features.
  • Ability to attract, hire, and mentor engineers of the highest caliber; experience in growing leaders and integrating top-tier talent.
  • Ability to think long term but execute short term.
