Job Summary:

The RN Clinical Nurse is an essential member of an interdisciplinary team, delivering high-quality, personalized, and safe patient care. This role involves performing clinical procedures independently and using equipment for diagnosis and treatment.

Working within the WellStar framework, guided by the Professional Practice Model, 5-Star Nursing, and evidence-based practices, the Clinical Nurse operates under WellStar Shared Governance. Competencies are aligned with these models and the WellStar Core Competencies.

RN Clinical Nurses must be licensed, knowledgeable, and able to work independently, adhering to the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act and the American Nurses Association’s standards. They are expected to advocate for patients, follow system policies, and support service excellence goals.


Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Clinical Skills:

  • Provide care to postpartum and newborn patients.

  • Perform the Nursing Process (assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation) using evidence-based practice and individualized care.

  • Utilize critical thinking skills.

  • Manage complex patient care situations.

  • Administer medications according to system policies and procedures.

  • Conduct pre-procedure preparations and safety checks.

  • Demonstrate sterile technique and IV administration competence.

  • Collaborate with patients and significant others, including bedside shift reports, interdisciplinary rounds, and patient education.

Quality and Patient Safety:

  • Verify patient ID using two identifiers (e.g., armband, DOB, verbal identification).

  • Check patient charts for similar name stickers.

  • Verify and clarify written orders.

  • Follow verbal orders and complete necessary follow-ups with written orders.

  • Complete pre-procedural verification/time-outs.

  • Adhere to all healthcare system policies, legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements, including TJC Patient Safety Goals and WellStar Health System safety absolutes.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Be flexible with hours to meet department needs.

  • Complete initial and ongoing competency assessments, mandatory education, and population-specific training.

  • Demonstrate teamwork and collaboration, promoting recruitment and retention of healthcare team members.

  • Serve as a preceptor or mentor for other nurses and staff, ensuring a qualified workforce and a healthy work environment.

  • Communicate effectively and handle communications properly.

  • Introduce yourself to patients and their families using proper scripting.

  • Transport patients as needed and ensure their privacy and comfort.

  • Answer department phones appropriately.

  • Perform QA/QC functions as needed and maintain current BLS and NRP certifications.

  • Participate in in-service training and staff meetings.

  • Adhere to Service Recovery and Customer Service Guidelines.

  • Perform daily emergency and in-room checks.

Patient Education:

  • Educate patients and their families/support systems.

  • Provide post-procedural home care instructions as needed.

Required Minimum Education:

  • Nursing Diploma required.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.


Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

  • Reg Nurse (Single State) or RN - Multi-state Compact

  • Basic Life Support or BLS - Instructor

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Provider or NRP - Instructor or NRP-Provisional


Additional License(s) and Certification(s):

  • National certification in area of specialty preferred. within 1 Year Preferred


Required Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years current experience in specified area of practice Required

  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.

  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and customer service skills.

  • Ability to function in a fast-paced environment and handle emergencies decisively and respectfully.

  • Excellent time management and critical thinking skills.

  • Effective communication with healthcare team members.

  • Basic computer skills and technology use for clinical care.

  • Current CPR certification and participation in annual safety and infection control programs.
