What Is the Opportunity?

The Small Commercial segment within our Business Insurance group at Travelers provides a broad array of competitive property and liability products and coverages for small businesses of all types, from Main Street retailers to small manufacturers. The Associate Account Executive (AAE), Small Commercial role will partner with brokers to provide coverage for new and/or renewal business based on customers' needs including property, general liability, commercial auto and/or umbrella coverage. As an AAE, you are decisive, detail-oriented, and are learning how to build relationships internally and externally to drive results. You are developing the ability to assess risk and sell our products, which will contribute to the profitability and success of Travelers.

What Will You Do?

  • Responsible for the profitability, growth, and/or retention of an assigned book of business in a high-volume, fast paced environment through knowledge and understanding of Travelers risk appetite to make appropriate decisions within own underwriting authority.
  • Underwrite and negotiate customer accounts to minimize risk and maximize profitability.
  • Ensure underwriting quality and profitability through application of the appropriate level of underwriting analysis based on risk complexity to accept, decline, modify, or rate and quote accounts.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal partners within the business unit and across the enterprise to create sales plans and identify cross-selling opportunities.
  • Develop relationships with external partners by regularly meeting with brokers, as needed, to market and sell Travelers products with a goal of writing and retaining accounts consistent with our risk appetite to meet annual retention and new business targets.
  • Partner with Sales Executives to identify and capture new business opportunities using consultative marketing and sales skills.
  • Attend and actively participate in internal trainings to further advance underwriting skills and marketplace/industry knowledge.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • College diploma or Bachelor’s degree.
  • One to three years of relevant insurance or underwriting experience.
  • Knowledge of property/casualty insurance products, the regulatory environment, and the local insurance market.
  • Relevant experience interacting with brokers.
  • Hold, or working towards, a Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) or other insurance-related designation.
  • Financial acumen, including the ability to understand financial statements and client’s loss history.
  • Critical thinking skills with the ability to identify routine underwriting, marketing or financial challenges and analyze available information to make decisions in alignment with our risk appetite.
  • Communication skills with the developing ability to successfully negotiate with brokers.

What is a Must Have?

  • One year of relevant insurance or underwriting experience
  • Valid driver’s license or alternative means of transportation
