As a Central Plant Mechanic, you will install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair heating and cooling systems in the central plant and remote facilities at Washington Dulles International Airport.GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintains and repairs heating and air-handling systems and related HVAC equipment, ranging from low-pressure boilers to high-temperature hot-water boilers and from small exhaust fans to multi-zoned air-handling units with multi-filtering systems.
Troubleshoots problems with equipment and systems (e.g., observes cracks and metal corrosion; checks gauges for pressure, temperature, and level; reviews data and logs).
Dismantles, inspects, cleans, repairs, or replaces equipment, such as pumps, condensers, expansion joints, motors, switches, and timers.
Answers trouble calls and performs preventive maintenance on high temperature hot water generators, centrifugal chillers, pumps, compressors, and cooling towers.
May work alongside HVAC Mechanics or Air-Conditioning Mechanics.
Regularly uses water sampling equipment and various tools, meters, probes, pumps, and other equipment. Occasionally uses distributed control system to determine the operational status of equipment.
Keeps records and reports of work completed and materials used.
Sets up and cleans up work-site. Performs ‘shop-keeping’ tasks.
Handles refrigerants and hazardous materials in accordance with regulations and other requirements. Works according to building and fire codes.
Keeps abreast of industrial changes in HVAC and refrigeration equipment and systems.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Four years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment. OR A Journey License as an Air Conditioning Mechanic.
One year of experience in the installation, test, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of a range of heating and air-handling systems and related HVAC equipment.
Full performance (journey) level knowledge of and skill in HVAC equipment and system installation, operation and adjustment, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair and replacement.
Skill in using tools, technical manuals, and other equipment/guides in performing journey level HVAC work.
Ability to rapidly acquire technical knowledge of new equipment and systems.
Ability to analyze data and information (including blueprints and schematics).
Ability to work safely and knowledge of the safety rules, regulations, and procedures to do so.
Ability to speak and write effectively.
Skill in using a computer, computerized work order and time and attendance system.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Licensed as a Journey level HVAC Mechanic.
EDUCATION
A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED
A state driver’s license in good standing.
Certification in HVAC (Universal) from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) within 90 days of hire, promotion, or placement on the job.
NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS
Is subject to hold-over and recall on a 24-hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal.
Work requires moderate to heavy physical exertion (exerting 20 to 40 pounds; lifts, pushes, and moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds).
May be subject to noise, heat, or electric shock from HVAC equipment; wears personal protective gear, as necessary. May be subject to adverse weather conditions when working outside.
Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quantity, quality, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.
