Shift Available: Full-time (36 hours/weekly) Days 7a-7p

In our Medicine Specialty Unit, you have the opportunity to gain a higher level of nursing in the same unit with the same team and same leadership by working with both Step Down and Medical beds. The Medicine Specialty Unit is a part of the largest service line within the hospital system. This unit is looking for motivated, compassionate, and disciplined nurses who crave a stimulating, learning experience, and work well with a team. The Medicine Specialty unit works with complex and varied patients with multifaceted disease processes.

We shoulder the financial responsibility, covering costs for LPNs in the LPN to BSN RN program, which offers asynchronous classes, Oklahoma-based clinical rotations, and internet-based coursework to accommodate working nurses. This flexible hybrid program, spanning 60 credit hours, blends 30 credit hours from advanced standing examination and 30 from program enrollment, providing an accessible pathway for LPNs to enhance their education and professional growth within the nursing field.

Are Full-Time and Part-Time (0.6 or more FTE) LPN employees 

Have been continuously employed by OU Health for a minimum of 6 months

Have a minimum of 1 year LPN experience

All those admitted to the program must remain employed by OU Health through program completion.

General Description: The License Practice Nurse (LPN) performs assigned direct and indirect nursing care activities in a hospital using critical thinking in clinical problem-solving and decision-making processes relative to scope of practice, knowledge, competency, and experience. The LPN practices under the direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN), advance practice registered nurse (APRN), dentist, or physician in accordance with the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.

Essential Responsibilities: 

Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position.  Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position. 

  • ·       Participates in focused assessment/reassessments of patient(s) by observing, collecting, recording and reporting objective and subjective data in an accurate and timely manner. Reports the condition and/or change in condition of the patient(s) as well as signs and symptoms that deviate from normal health status.

    ·       Assists in implementing the nursing plan of care within the concepts of the LPN curriculum with consideration for safety in practice; according to established prioritization of needs; documenting and communicating nursing interventions and responses of patient(s) to care.

    ·       Assists in evaluating patient(s) responses; document and communicate evaluation data to appropriate health care team members; contributes to the modification of the nursing plan of care on the based on ongoing evaluation of the patient(s).

    ·       Collaborates with team members by sharing relevant information; demonstrating initiative, and supporting team decisions and the work life of the department.

    ·       Provides care consistent with the American Nurses Associations Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements as well as the assigned clinical areas Standards of Care and Professional Performance.

    ·       Assists in the supervision of unlicensed assistive personnel.

    ·       Support academic mission of OU Health.

    ·       Performs other related duties as assigned within scope of practice after demonstrating required competencies or completing requisite training.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

·    LPN Degree from an Accredited Institution.

·    Current Oklahoma Board of Nursing LPN License or a current multi-state compact LPN License (eNLC).

·    Specific care environment certifications must be obtained within six months of hire.

Experience:

·    New Grads are welcomed.

·    One or more years of experience preferred.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Current LPN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact LPN License (eNLC). Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of professional nursing practice, techniques, and procedures.
  • Demonstrates professional performance in ability to organize, coordinate, plan and evaluate nursing needs of assigned patients.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
