About Engineering Insights

As part of the Financial Times, one of the world's most respected brands and news sources, the Engineering Insights team build internal platforms which streamline information access about the FT’s technical estate. Our aim is to help everyone across the product and technology department to make informed decisions using our data.

Our most popular service is called Biz Ops, a knowledge graph about our people, teams, and technologies. This information is used to connect and automate processes, it helps operations to quickly navigate incidents, and it enables teams to find and track problems.

We operate as a full stack, fully empowered, team and who own our operations, ways of working and roadmap. Maintaining platforms means we need to demonstrate both technical expertise and be able to provide help and guidance to others.

This role will be right for you if:

  • You want to work in an empowered, self-sufficient team and are motivated to design and build products that help your colleagues to understand complex issues.
  • You have an understanding of modern full-stack development and are looking to learn a variety of technical skills rather than become a specialist.
  • You’re interested in the entire software development lifecycle, from validating requirements to architectural design, through coding and testing, operating software in production, and continuously evaluating performance.
  • You’re interested in collecting data and using it to encourage others into action.
  • You know how to be pragmatic and know when to focus on adding value not just code.
  • You enjoy collaboration with other disciplines and technical leaders outside of your team.
  • You will be an active member to shape the culture of our team, we hire for cultural betterment not cultural fit.

In return we’ll give you:

  • Interesting tech where your input is valued in both product and technical choices
  • A good work / life balance and rewarding work environment
  • Motivated, experienced, kind colleagues you can learn from

Our technology

Here’s a list of things we use a lot. It’s not comprehensive, but gives you a taste of what our stack and tools look like:

  • JavaScript (we use Node.js and sometimes React and TypeScript too)
  • GraphQL
  • Version control (we use GitHub)
  • Continuous integration (we use CircleCI)
  • AWS (Lambda)

While we don’t expect you to have worked with all of these, it will be a bonus for us if you have worked with some of them.

At the FT we keep a public matrix of competencies for each engineering level, this role is for a Software Engineer and you can see the competencies expected from you here.

What’s in it for you? Our benefits

Our benefits vary by location but we are committed to providing best-in-class perks across all our offices. These include generous annual leave, medical cover, inclusive parental leave packages, subsidised gym memberships and opportunities to give back to the community. Full details of our benefits are available here.
