This position is part of the Space Systems Development (SSD) business unit. SSD is Blue Origin’s advanced development arm dedicated to developing mission architectures, creating, and feeding new technologies into our existing offerings, building our next generation of leaders, and commercializing new platforms that fuel Blue Origin’s growth and further its mission. Our work scope is broad and deep, forging the path toward our vision of millions of people living and working in space.  

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of engineers and technicians within the Space System Development (SSD) business unit, the Crew Systems Engineer (RE) will independently develop and align architectures, concepts of operations, hardware trades for the Space Destinations Crew Systems hardware on Orbital Reef.  The RE will individually perform hardware design throughout the life cycle, from requirements to design, acceptance and operations.  The RE will interface with affected systems and stakeholders throughout the life cycle of the hardware development and will provide technical leadership to develop solutions and execute development, testing, and analysis to support technology maturation, trade studies, and down-selects. The RE will set technical direction and provide solutions to complex technical problems and issues.  Serve as the prime technical contact with the CAD team to deliver a physical depiction of the Crew Systems hardware within the vehicle. The Crew Systems RE will evaluate hardware suppliers for technical, cost, and schedule adherence to the requirements and partner with the procurement team to drive execution and develop strong supplier relationships.

Qualifications (required):

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in chemical, mechanical, electrical, aerospace, or environmental engineering or related engineering field.
  • 7+ years of technical experience in the design and analysis of space systems, preferably spacecraft or in-space stages, and 2+ years leading a team and/or project
  • Experience across the product life cycle (pre-conceptual design through field support)
  • Demonstrated ability to develop trades and metrics-driven data for quick decision-making and streamlined execution.
  • Experience with research and development of one or more technologies relevant to crew systems for extreme environments.
  • Familiarity and experience with hands-on prototyping and design, experiment design, test methods, and general laboratory skills
  • Experience managing and working collaboratively in small teams on fast-paced projects
  • History of developing solutions with partially defined requirements and changing criteria
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

  • B.S. or M.S. in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Experience with spacecraft crew systems technologies and architectures.
  • Ability to transition between analysis and design to build and test activities.
  • Strong project management and team leadership skills, including the ability to utilize tools to manage schedule and technical requirements adherence and verification.
  • Proficiency in Creo or other CAD design tools
  • Experience with a scripting language or platform such as Matlab or Python
  • Experience utilizing tools such as Confluence and JIRA
  • Experience with proposal development, proposal review, and supplier management


 

Compensation Range for:

CA applicants is $146,644.50-$205,302.30;CO applicants is $134,838.38-$188,773.73;WA applicants is $146,644.50-$205,302.30
