Materials Management Supervisor

As a Materials Management Supervisor, you will be responsible for directing the daily activities of the Storeroom and Receiving departments and activities relating to the storage and distribution of supplies and equipment.  


A caregiver in this position works 3rd shift, 9:30pm - 6:00am. 


A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Use electronic handheld devices, pallet jacks, copiers, fax machines, carts, and other equipment to perform regular duties.  

  • Perform cycle counts and physical inventories.  

  • Use the Material Management Information System to order, track, and deliver products.  

  • Provide daily supervision of storeroom and receiving. 

  • Develop the work schedule for Materials Handlers, assign tasks to caregivers and inspect work. 

  • Supervise the receiving process, verify quantities and information of products received to Purchase Order, and direct the prompt delivery of supplies, equipment, forms, mail, and other items to requesting locations. 

  • Assist with the reconciliation of discrepancies and notify management when necessary.  

  • Investigate errors on shipped items and correct problems as necessary. 

  • Record signatures for delivery purposes.  

  • Inspect packages for damage, resolve damaged items with supplier and report unresolved damage issues with management as necessary. 

  • Complete staff performance reviews.  

  • Establish department goals and organize processes to meet stated goals.  

  • Develop training and education process for department tasks. 

  • Verify the schedule vs. Kronos timekeeping records.  

  • Ensure proper use of all equipment. 

  • Demonstrate use of process improvement techniques and philosophies.  

  • Actively seek to eliminate errors and consistently improve service to customers. 

  • Supervise data entry into the Material Management Information System to record requisitions, receipts, and returns. 

  • Verify system information and take appropriate steps to reconcile when necessary.  

  • Research errors to find cause and route as necessary to resolve. 

  • Conduct audits of delivery locations. 

  • Maintain and readjust established par level information to minimize shortages and maintain customer service levels. 

  • Suggest changes to stocking procedures to improve the performance of the department. 

  • Supervise the preparation of outgoing packages and calculate and record shipping costs as needed. 

  • Assist with the physical inventory process.  

  • Count and verify supplies in inventory and report discrepancies to upper management as necessary. 

  • Engage and follow up on the Purchasing Department (buyers) as necessary. 

  • Provide management with variance reports on discrepancies in supply budgets. 

  • Keep work area clean, neat and free of debris. 

  • Complete six months of training to learn specialized surgery components, inventory systems and departmental policies and procedures.  


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Bachelor’s degree.  

  • One year of experience in inventory control functions with responsibility for par levels, purchasing functions, inventory analysis and usage trends.  

  • A high school diploma/GED and three years of related experience may substitute the education requirement.  

  • Valid driver’s license (VDL) to drive a box truck.  

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word.  

  • Basic knowledge of mathematics sufficient to add, subtract and maintain logs. 


Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • One year of supervisory experience.  

  • Experience in a healthcare supply chain function.

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment.
  • May require periods of sitting, standing and the ability to walk to various locations throughout the health system to attend meetings.
  • Must have normal or corrected vision and be able to clearly communicate verbally by phone or in person.
  • Must have own transportation to travel to multiple sites.
