Position Overview

The Human Capital Business Partner for Japan will serve as a trusted advisor to Japan employees and support key talent initiatives critical to the business growth agenda. This includes covering a breadth of business functions including the Investment Functions: Private Equity, Hybrid Value, Corporate Credit, and Real Assets, the Client & Product Solutions (Institutional Sales/Product and Global Wealth) Team, and Enterprise functions (Finance, Legal Tax and Compliance and Technology). The key imperatives of the role are to provide sound and commercial advice while maintaining an active focus on day-to-day execution and HC support. 

The successful candidate will need to forge strong, collaborative working relationships with many individuals throughout the firm, including employees and managers across the respective businesses as well as with fellow HC colleagues both in New York, London and in India.  It is critical this individual is able to deal with all aspects of the employee talent lifecycle. This includes end-to-end support across recruiting, onboarding, talent management, employee relations, performance and career development processes (including performance reviews, training, leadership development, executive coaching, etc.) as well as general HC operational matters (reporting, data requests, legal documentation, employee documentation, immigration documentation, local employment laws, etc.). Given the entrepreneurial culture of the firm, the individual must bring a ‘no task too big or too small’ attitude to the role.

The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to understand the nuances of a financial services firm and the nature of the matrixed role Human Capital plays accordingly. High emotional intelligence/interpersonal effectiveness as well as ability to see through processes and tasks as necessary to execute this role successfully and to gain the trust and credibility of the broader team this role partners closely with.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary HR contact for Japan, ensuring regulatory compliance, employee support, and alignment with Apollo policies. This will entail managing key employment processes, providing Japanese-language HR support for relevant HC processes, partnering with regional HC team, ensuring consistent policy implementation, and involvement in Japan-specific projects.
  • Responsible for supporting the life cycle of employees across Japan including on- and off-boarding, performance reviews, benefits, promotions, compensation planning, employee relations and reporting.
  • Build relationships and provide human capital guidance, counsel and perspective to regional business leaders, managers and employees
  • Support and drive key HC initiatives and strategic projects in the office / in the region including, but not limited to, diversity, organization changes, senior hire integration and onboarding, communication plans, business acquisition/integrations, etc.
  • Identify and support professional development initiatives, including design and delivery of appropriate training and coaching activities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external HC stakeholders and manage related processes, procedures, and reporting. Examples of stakeholders in Asia include local government departments, regulators, and benefits vendors.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Demonstrated success as a Human Capital Business Partner, Financial Services experience preferred
  • Good working knowledge of local employment laws in Japan market
  • High level of maturity, able to manage confidential or sensitive information with impeccable judgement
  • Strong analytical and quantitative orientation, including proficiency with excel
  • Good interpersonal skills, able to build relationships across all levels internally and externally
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective organizational and follow up skills; High attention to detail; a self-starter
  • Effective team player; collaborative and an influencer. Able to partner well with colleagues both regionally and globally.
  • Strong self-initiative, willing to pick up new or share additional assignments as required.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Good excel skills such as vlookups and pivot tables required.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience in a similar multinational set up is preferred.
