POSITION SUMMARY:

Kemper seeks a highly talented professional to join its growing Tax Department.  More specifically, as a tax executive, the AVP, Tax will direct and oversee reporting and compliance matters and ensure timely, accurate and complete fulfillment of these deliverables.  Reporting directly to the SVP, Tax, this role will work closely with tax department teammates, business partners and external parties to create a more scalable function that provides timely and actionable insight regarding tax matters.  The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker and be able to lead day-to-day tactical matters. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Lead financial reporting for income taxes, including under ASC 740, SSAP 101 and other relevant guidance
  • Ensure complete, accurate and timely tax return filings and payments
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with leadership
  • Be responsible for written research and analysis with respect to technical tax rules and tax accounting rules
  • Regularly maintain and share information related to tax attributes (carryovers, capacity, basis, etc.)
  • Oversee tax forecasting in support of effective tax attribute management
  • Lead integration efforts
  • Manage government examinations
  • Oversee, guide and lead process improvement and technology implementation projects
  • Partner with other leaders on tax planning and risk management activities
  • Manage by KPIs
  • Develop and mentor team members
  • Manage relationships with external service providers

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field, or equivalent training
  • 10+ years of relevant tax experience with an accounting firm, law firm or corporate tax function
  • 7+ years of supervising teams and developing people
  • Advanced knowledge of ASC 740 and SSAP 101
  • Advanced knowledge of insurance company and corporate taxation

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Ability to identify and analyze statutes, regulations and applicable guidance; make recommendations; and take action
  • Experience enabling growth, driving operational effectiveness, managing risk and improving the quality, speed and availability of data relevant to tax matters
  • Track record in prioritizing competing demands, making sound decisions and delivering results on tight timelines
  • Experience working with digital technologies including common tax provision and compliance platforms
  • Experience working in a matrix environment, influencing strategy and achieving goals by working with people across the organization
  • Detail-oriented, organized and possesses excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including written and oral communication skills, with an ability to address complex tax matters in ways that are meaningful and useful to non-tax professionals
  • Experience with life/nonlife insurance groups
  • Ability to attract, develop and retain high quality finance professionals
  • Master's degree in Tax, Accounting, or related field preferred; CPA a plus
  • This position is a hybrid position that will need to occasionally work from our Chicago Office location
