Position Overview
Insulet is looking for a Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to help drive innovation and leadership within its design team. The Staff Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing Insulet’s next generation wearables and platform extensions. To accomplish this, the Staff Mechanical Design Engineer works quickly to prove feasibility on device subsystems, rapidly prototype integrated systems, optimize new devices for manufacturability, and ultimately support design transfer of a commercial-ready product into a highly automated production environment. Success depends on a strong understanding of engineering and scientific fundamentals as well as experience with end-to-end product design in the medical device environment. This is a challenging role, suitable for an energetic problem solver who thrives on difficult technical challenges and who wishes to work on a small team charged with developing solutions to hard problems.
Responsibilities
Generate next-generation insulin delivery technologies (inclusive of ideation, design, and filing of intellectual property)
Design device subsystems using CAD software and support full system integration efforts
Analyze design solutions using engineering software tools and statistical methods.
Identify and mitigate risks associated with device functionality, reliability, safety, COGs and manufacturing scalability
Design, setup and execute or guide feasibility tests
Prototype and test subsystems using in-house rapid prototyping and testing equipment.
Work on platform extensions which utilize Insulet’s core pump technologies
Work with and lead cross-functional teams and efforts within the organization
Work within final assembly manufacturing environment(s) and assist in early-stage process development and manufacturing optimization to ensure products meet design intent
Work with and manage external suppliers, conduct DFM reviews, and go onsite as needed
Conduct and lead competitor technology tear-down studies
Present engineering takeaways and proposed solutions to R&D, operations and commercial stakeholders
Develop or guide development of fixtures and simple tooling to assemble and test early-stage prototypes
Mentor junior engineers, co-ops and interns
Required Skills and Competencies
Strong foundation in mechanical engineering fundamentals and first principles
Knowledgeable in the design and joining of plastic components for bio-compatible applications
Advanced CAD capabilities - complex assemblies, surfacing and multi-body modeling experience, preferred.
Ethical, responsible, and data-driven decision-maker
Ability to effectively communicate (verbal/written) at multiple levels of an organization
Knowledge and experience in design of experiments (DOE) and medical device V&V
Knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC), GD&T; Lean, Six Sigma, preferred
Knowledge of infusion pumps and subcutaneous injection systems, preferred
PC skills - MS Office Suite, SolidWorks, and ePDM required. Ansys, LabVIEW, a preferred
Ability to organize and judge priorities, as well as oversee and delegate responsibilities to other engineering staff / team members, when necessary
Knowledge of Design for manufacturing/cost (DFM/C) and automated assembly experience, a plus.
Education and Experience
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering. Master’s Degree Preferred.
Minimum of 8 years of electromechanical product design and development experience, preferably medical device class II or III.
Experience in the design of injection molded components, stampings and machined components.
Experience in the design of disposable, bio-compatible fluid paths and/or container solutions, a strong plus.
Experience with electromechanical devices (PCBA, batteries, interconnects, layout), a plus
Experience in high volume product design ( >10 million units per year), a strong plus
A track record of generating novel ideas / IP, a strong plus
Additional Information
The position is hybrid at our Acton, MA location. 3 days/week in the office is the normal and depending on project 5 days/week may be required.
Travel is estimated at 10% or less and will flex depending on business need.
NOTE: This position is eligible for hybrid working arrangements (requires on-site work from an Insulet office at least 1x/week; may work remotely other days). #LI-Hybrid
Additional Information:
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $104,600.00 - $157,250.00. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position in the primary work location in the US. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
