Job Posting Title:
Product Software Engineering ManagerReq ID:
10138692Job Description:
Technology is at the heart of Disney’s past, present, and future. Disney Entertainment and ESPN Product & Technology is a global organization of engineers, product developers, designers, technologists, data scientists, and more – all working to build and advance the technological backbone for Disney’s media business globally.
The team marries technology with creativity to build world-class products, enhance storytelling, and drive velocity, innovation, and scalability for our businesses. We are Storytellers and Innovators. Creators and Builders. Entertainers and Engineers. We work with every part of The Walt Disney Company’s media portfolio to advance the technological foundation and consumer media touch points serving millions of people around the world.
Here are a few reasons why we think you’d love working here:
1. Building the future of Disney’s media: Our Technologists are designing and building the products and platforms that will power our media, advertising, and distribution businesses for years to come.
2. Reach, Scale & Impact: More than ever, Disney’s technology and products serve as a signature doorway for fans' connections with the company’s brands and stories. Disney+. Hulu. ESPN. ABC. ABC News…and many more. These products and brands – and the unmatched stories, storytellers, and events they carry – matter to millions of people globally.
3. Innovation: We develop and implement groundbreaking products and techniques that shape industry norms, and solve complex and distinctive technical problems.
Job Summary:
As a Engineering Manager, you will hit the ground running providing clear technical leadership to a team of software engineers working on advertising products. You will be the results-driven technical leader of a motivated team where we’ll be looking for you to help steer the team in order to drive application architecture, code quality, and make sure we are doing the right thing by our users. You will lead your team by example: taking a hands-on role in engineering solid, performant and scalable technical solutions. You will use your deep engineering, architecture, and leadership skills to drive your team to iteratively and continuously deploy new features, functionality, and products to our customers. You will be an important part of a lean DevOps and automation culture where we’ll be looking for you to collaborate with the frontend and backend leads to drive architecture, champion code quality, and to build optimized services.
We want someone that has grown up through the web software development ranks - possessing 10 or more years’ experience in designing and architecting highly scalable, secure, performant, and usable web applications using Microsoft and Java tech stack. The ideal candidate would possess deep skills in server side technology (NET, C#, ASP.Net Core, Spring Boot, Java, RESTful Web Services), while having expertise with orchestration and containerization platforms (Docker and Kubernetes), coupled with hands on persistence and data streaming technology experience (MySQL, Oracle, DynamoDB, RavenDB, Redis, Kafka).
While The Walt Disney Company is a large company, ideally, we’d like if you have some previous experience in a U.S. startup environment and be comfortable performing multiple roles. We strive to get things done quickly, with high quality, and we are committed to the agile methodology. Our work is guided by lean principles (looking at value and looking for waste; not doing anything ‘for the sake of doing it’).
We’re looking for a passionate, impactful, technical leader who wants to come here to do their very best work and make their mark, add their chapter to the long and storied history of The Walt Disney Company. Someone who holds themselves and their teammates accountable in a professional, collaborative manner. A collaborative technologist who seeks to bring the best out in themselves and those around them. Someone who can provide a fresh perspective and innovative insight into our initiatives.
Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:
Be willing to take ownership for the software developed under your watch, all the way to production and through operations.
Take an active and hands-on role in the growth of the individuals on your team: mentoring, career coaching, and performance management.
Actively iterate with your leader and fellow Engineering Managers on a common set of continuously evolving Software Engineering standards and practices, and champion them on your team as you mentor individuals.
Lead and oversee Senior Engineers as they architect and deliver cloud native and service-oriented UI components and applications.
Provide day to day hands-on technical leadership, oversight, and mentorship for your immediate team.
Provide Software Engineering leadership across various product teams and individuals, regardless of reporting structure.
Collaborate with team and peers to design complex applications, peer review code, and suggest optimization.
Enable continuous deployment by championing quality engineering practices: linting, unit testing, web UI testing, pipeline automation.
Reason logically and creatively, identifying problems, drawing valid conclusions from the data available, and develop effective solutions while applying creative thinking in the design and development of high performing web applications.
Collaborate with and influence product teams to build and maintain design system standards, processes, and adoption.
Check-in valuable, clean code on a daily basis that adds new features and capabilities.
Create reference implementations for the purpose of mentoring and leading your team.
Investigate and resolve any production issues from end user (UI) to persistence layer and work to prevent them.
Work with project managers to ensure that all project deliverables are on time and high quality.
Assist in rapid prototyping of design concepts in order to prove and test ideas with end-users.
Basic Qualifications:
Have 8-10 years of experience in web application development or software engineering in a large enterprise environment using modern frameworks (e.g., ASP.NET Core, SprintBoot, Docker, Kubernetes)

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of performance testing and application profiling.
Strong curiosity about how Disney delivers the Magic and a desire to be a part of it.
Track record of driving complex features or systems from inception to production in a leadership capacity.
