Pay Range

$47.50 - $71.25

Major Responsibilities:

  • Manages the work of the team(s). Selects, coaches, and develops team(s). Sets clear expectations to inspire and motivate the team. Manages performance by recognizing achievement, providing feedback, and administering progressive discipline when necessary.
  • May develop and/or recommend operating and capital budgets and controls expenditures within approved budget objectives.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and standards of practice to ensure quality patient care
  • Ensure adequate and fiscally responsible staffing for optimal patient care in assigned areas. Develop and implement retention strategies, mentor future leaders, and foster an environment of continuous learning.
  • Oversee Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and benchmarking activities. Develop and incorporate Performance Improvement projects.
  • Ensure compliance with all standards required by accrediting agencies, legal, clinical practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures the department has the proper equipment and facilities to assure the safe, effective and timely provision of services to patients.
  • Maintain direct communication with site administration, medical directors, nursing departments, and other hospital departments. Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to assure optimal patient care. Actively participate in system-wide business initiatives through the Respiratory Care Council or service line meetings.
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that people’s actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations, and laws applicable to the organization's business.
  • Should be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner/Respiratory Therapist in the state of practice, Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) within 6 months unless determined otherwise by the department leader (Required upon hire in North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama). RRT-NPS (neonatal/pediatric specialist) issued by the NBRC required for Illinois Children’s hospital roles.

Education Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited respiratory care program. Bachelor’s degree (BS, BA) required (or equivalent experience may be considered). 

Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 5 years of experience in clinical setting, including 1 year of supervisory experience. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Excellent organization, prioritization, and time management skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and establish working relationships. 
  • Effective problem solving, decision making, and delegation skills. 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, bend, twist, climb and reach above shoulders at various times throughout the workday. 
  • Ability to work within a rapidly changing environment 
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials and life-threatening diseases  
  • Position may require local travel (exposure to road and weather hazards).  

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in respiratory care, Master’s degree (MBA, MHA, etc)
