Job Description:

Summary:

The person in this position will undertake challenging work pursuing state and federal environmental review and complex permitting opportunities primarily in the Midwest. The person in this role will work with Barr’s clients and teams to identify, scope, and manage environmental review, permitting, and compliance projects; provide technical advice and support; build and maintain client relationships; and pursue business development opportunities.

Work will include supporting characterization of environmental resources, impact assessments, mitigation planning, project permitting, and environmental monitoring/compliance in various levels of responsibility, based on project needs. This person will also provide leadership in Barr’s Michigan offices collaborating with other Barr leaders to develop and implement strategic business plans; assist with recruiting, hiring, and developing staff; leading multidisciplinary projects and teams; and helping further develop our environmental review and natural resources management consulting capabilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental science/studies/policy, ecology, natural resources management, biology, botany, or a related natural resources field

  • 15 years of direct, relevant experience

  • Experience with State of Michigan and federal environmental reviews, regulatory interpretation, and permitting processes, including NREPA Part 303 and Part 301

  • Experience conducting wetland delineation and functional assessments, wetland impact assessment, wetland mitigation planning, and construction monitoring

  • Applied knowledge of state and federal wetland, stream, and endangered species programs

  • Experience managing projects (i.e., forming teams, overseeing work execution, monitoring and controlling cost and schedule, implementing quality assurance and quality control, and stakeholder communications)

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members and clients

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and implement business development strategies

  • Demonstrated ability to lead project teams to meet commitments and client needs

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, client-driven environment and to manage teams/commitments across many different clients and projects

  • A flexible working style and the ability to work with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs

  • Willingness to occasionally modify personal schedules as required to meet deadlines and/or client needs

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in related area or specialized experience in the fields of ecology, natural resources, or a related field

  • Experience with project contracting

  • Experience with construction management/oversight

  • Experience negotiating with regulators on behalf of clients

  • Familiarity with CAD or GIS tools (ArcGIS, Collector, etc.) and GPS units

A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Ann Arbor, Michigan, office.

Note: Applicant must be able to traverse and work in difficult terrain typical of backcountry (e.g., dense vegetation, fallen timber, poor footing soils, streams, etc.) roadways, and construction sites. Work may also require entering and working within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of mining or other industrial facilities. Safety training will be provided.
