We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced leader of leaders with a strong accounting background to join our Corporate Controllers organization as the Assistant Vice President, Accounting Services. This role will report directly to the VP, Accounting Services and is a key leadership role within the Corporate Controllers organization. This role is accountable for leading various areas within the Accounting Services team and operating as a key leader within Controllers, including representing Controllers on broader finance projects, helping to lead resolution of issues, and acting as a subject matter expert on complex accounting areas.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with an in-office presence in our Hartford, CT location. 

Responsibilities:
Serve as a key leader and primary support person for the VP of Accounting Services within the Controllers organization by moving forward Accounting Operations team priorities and projects; defining, managing, and driving the monthly/quarterly/annual financial accounting close and reporting process for various areas; ensuring that accounting is completed in accordance with our accounting policies. Remove roadblocks and resolve any issues that may arise, continually evaluate the controls impacting the financial reporting process, and ensure appropriate documentation and testing for SOX and business controls.

The AVP will provide oversight of a broad range of The Hartford’s monthly Accounting and Reporting Process, including some combination of the following:
1)    Benefits accounting and reporting, including planning, outlook and actuals reporting for the company’s benefits expenses, long-term incentive stock compensation and cash bonus plans;
2)    The Company’s PeopleSoft financial modules (i.e. general ledger, accounts payable, travel & entertainment and fixed assets);
3)    Review and oversight of the results of the Corporate segment, inclusive of all of the company’s debt and equity reporting, and calculation and analysis of EPS; 
4)    The monthly corporate expense close process and cash processing; and
5)    The balancing and reconciliation of general ledger accounts between the company’s multiple premium and claims administration systems and the cash management system.

Trusted advisor for the business: Build and maintain relationships of trust with multiple senior leaders of the enterprise including the ability to be a strategic thought partner.  Partner with the various areas of the business and help Controllers successfully support business initiatives, including new products, system integrations, etc. Work closely with Human Resources Benefits leadership to ensure that all existing and new benefits initiatives are included in Operating Plans and Outlooks.

Innovation Champion: Be a champion for Controllers to identify and help implement innovative capabilities and new technologies, such as GenAI.

Change Management Leader: Effectively lead team through transformative system and process changes that are part of the Controllers team vision, helping the team to embrace and drive forward positive efficiency changes.

Maintain a positive attitude and demonstrate the ability to pivot to support your respective teams providing disparate finance services to the organization. Responsible for providing exceptional leadership and coaching in order to maintain and build an organization of strong financial accounting and control-oriented individuals.  Build skillsets of individuals and evaluate capabilities of team members for succession planning.  Foster a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion and drive continuous improvement by responsibly embracing new technologies to enhance our processes and create efficiency.  Embrace the company’s hybrid work model and support the company’s return to office goals.


Qualifications:

Minimum 10+ years of accounting experience preferred; insurance industry experience required; and the ideal candidate will also have Big 4 public accounting (with some insurance clients) experience.

Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Accounting required 
CPA strongly preferred

Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and NAIC Statutory accounting required.  A deep understanding of stock compensation and pension accounting is a plus.
Strong leadership and team management skills. Experience leading high-performing teams to work effectively under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
Ability to lead initiatives in a matrix environment across the Controllers and Finance organization.  Partner with IT Finance leadership over projects involving the systems used in this role’s organization.

Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to producing timely and accurate financial results.

Demonstrated team player with outstanding communication, interpersonal and organizational influencing skills; excellent stakeholder/relationship management skills and leadership behavior.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required
 

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$153,840 - $230,760
