What we need 

We are seeking a Senior Engineering Project Manager (travel role) to join our Industrial Controls team within our Core Hardware Engineering organization. This pivotal role will report to the Director of Industrial Controls Engineering, where you will support the execution of development and deployment tasks while progressing strategic initiatives. You will be instrumental in prioritizing and scheduling to ensure our team produces reliable, high-quality products for our customers, ensuring seamless integration with other stakeholders, and optimizing operational efficiency. As a Senior Engineering Project Manager, you will work very closely with customers and stakeholders to align goals, priorities, and responsibilities across the various workstreams and partners. The ideal candidate will exhibit a profound commitment to customer satisfaction, adeptly gathering insights and engaging in constructive dialogue to refine our solutions, and always exceed expectations.

The Industrial Controls team is part of our Core Hardware Engineering organization, which is on a mission to develop, deploy, and maintain products for our warehouse automation systems. With a proven track record in industrial automation specification, design implementation, standard engineering practices and documentation, we aim to develop and deploy platforms that utilize advanced hardware and push the limits of technology. We prioritize cross-functional collaboration, continuously refine our engineering processes, and uphold high standards in implementation to align with the strategic goals of the company and the evolving demands of the market. As a Senior Engineering Project Manager, you will be at the forefront of this mission, supporting a team to build world-class automation platforms that minimize development time, reduce commissioning time, and eliminate unplanned downtime.  

What you’ll do 

  • Manage Industrial Controls and Project issue tracking to identify problems, track root causes, and follow corrective action plans to completion.  

  • Provide daily reports to measure progress, identify roadblocks, and prioritize newly identified tasks. 

  • Evaluate site performance by functional area, coordinating with site resources to ensure site readiness.  

  • Ensure KPIs are accurately tracked and analyze trend data. 

  • Propose and support development of tools to track new metrics and data to better evaluate site performance and readiness across newly implemented systems. 

  • Be the expert on issue statuses knowing all the details and continuously providing the real-time status across engineering teams and leadership.  

  • Triage issues based on priority, impact, risk, and release timing. 

  • Communicate requirements, scope, schedule, and resource constraints to cross-functional design engineering teams. 

  • Represent Symbotic to our customers as project lead, ensuring clear communication, effective negotiation, and resolution of any roadblocks to success. 

  • Be an enterprise-level problem solver with a can-do, outcome-oriented mindset and the belief that the impossible can be achieved. 

  • Think strategically but drive actions and outcomes. Respond quickly to shifting priorities without losing sight of longer-term projects and goals. 

  • Collaborate closely with Release Management to facilitate seamless updates and deployments of PLC and HMI systems for clients, whether on-site or remotely. 

  • Up to 65% of travel may be required.

What you’ll need 

  • BS in Engineering or related discipline. 

  • Minimum 8 years of Project Management and Coordination expertise, functioning well in large-scale, complex, cross-functional programs managing highly technical resources. 

  • Ability to travel up to 65% to various customer locations and testing facilities (Canada and United States).   

  • Experience with using metrics and data analysis to support or drive the right or most beneficial process improvements.  

  • Ability to understand complex technical issues and facilitate resolution and triage issues based on priority, impact, risk, and release timing. 

  • Ability to analyze large quantities of data and report on trends. 

  • Good negotiation and relationship skills, both in directing the technical team and ability to manage and reach solutions to competing priorities.  

  • Proficient in JIRA, MS Project, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, Word, and Visio. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to clearly articulate program information to any level of the company. 

  • Demonstrated experience running projects using knowledge of industry-standard tools and best practices.  

  • Experience with industrial/robotic automation is preferred. 

  • Experience with industrial controls or PLC is preferred. 

Other considerations

  • Remote, travel-based position.

  • Employee must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations. Our main office is in Wilmington, MA. The person taking this position will be required to perform work at our customer installation locations for extended periods where equipment is installed and ready for commissioning.

  • The employee is frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms.

  • The employee is routinely required to work at heights of up to 45 feet and within restrictive areas of 24 inches. to stand; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Must comply with all safety requirements and protocols, including without limitation Lock out tag-out safety protocols and fall protection safety protocols.

  • Approximately 65% of site time will be spent on a construction site with PPE required (hard hat, safety vest, steel toes, eyeglasses, ear protection, fall protection (e.g., safety harness).

  • There will be steep stairs to climb into the structure. You may be required to routinely walk up and down stairs to navigate the automation structure.

  • You will regularly be near railings that are high off the ground.

  • Subject to environmental conditions, protection from weather conditions but not necessarily temperature changes. Must be capable of working in temperatures ranging from 105° to 32° Fahrenheit.
