Barrier Management Specialist - Environmental Health & Safety

Job Summary:

Inspect all fire/smoke barriers within the hospital(s) and make needed repairs for each identified deficiency.

Education & Experience

High school diploma / GED and four (4) years of carpentry or related experience.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:  HAZWOPER certification required within one year of hire and Firestop certification required within one year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Must be able to climb ladders and access tight areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains accurate documentation for accreditation requirements.
  • Serves as a member of the UMMC fire response team.
  • Conducts construction project inspections.
  • Conducts permit meetings for above ceiling work and maintains appropriate documents and follow-up inspections. 
  • Inspect all sides of each smoke wall, fire wall, and smoke partition to confirm integrity of wall.
  • Repair any identified breaches of walls by means of an approved fire stopping system.
  • Inspect all opening protectives (doors and windows) within the fire walls system to assure compliance.
  • Inspect construction and renovation areas following completion to assure integrity of all fire wall systems.
  • Document all identified deficiencies and repairs completed on each fire wall system.

Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, frequent work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, frequent crouching/stooping, occasional driving, frequent kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, occasional sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
