Position Summary

Conducts public health surveillance data collection from various public health agencies, state and local government agencies in Missouri, hospitals, clinics and private physician offices, following specific methods developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Reviews abstracted surveillance data and follows CDC guidelines to determine whether children meet diagnostic criteria for autistic spectrum disorder. Travels locally to represent the surveillance project on behalf of the Missouri Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Project (ADDM) and Washington University in St. Louis.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Travel to government agencies (including public schools), hospitals, clinics and private physician offices and other sources of medical and therapy services for children with autism and developmental disabilities in metropolitan St. Louis to represent the ADDM Project and to abstract medical and other data onto computerized databases.
  • Perform initial analysis of abstracted data.
  • Edit, code and prepare the data for upload to the main database.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, background in developmental psychology, neuropsychology, speech pathology and/or special education, as well as experience public health surveillance and epidemiology.
  • Experience with computers and MS Office applications.
  • Candidate must be detail-oriented and able to work independently.
  • Ability to think critically, synthesize large amounts of medical data and apply complex diagnostic algorithms.

Working Conditions:
Job Location/Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment.
  • This position requires regular travel to surveillance sources throughout the metropolitan St. Louis area (MO and IL); transportation is not provided, however, mileage expenses will be reimbursed. Occasional travel to Atlanta for meetings at the CDC are required. The project office will be located at the WUSM campus.

Salary Range

$19.29 - $29.91 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
