The Opportunity

Abbott Rapid Diagnostics is part of Abbott’s Diagnostics family of businesses, bringing together exceptional teams of experts and industry leading technologies to support diagnostic testing which provides important information for treatment and management of diseases and other conditions.

The position of Senior Director, Research Science, Assay Development is within our Infectious Disease business unit located in San Diego, California.  This role oversees and provides research and development leadership organization in the area of Assay Development. In alignment with DVP R&D establishes strategic direction to meet long term scientific and commercial organizational goals.

This role will require regular travel to Portland, ME, roughly 50%+, or relocation to the Portland area.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for Assay Development activities.
  • Establish vision and strategy for Assays that maintain and improve current products and deliver new essential and differentiated products to the market.
  • Has the ability to execute upon strategy to support LRP and beyond.
  • Ensure that sound scientific and technical knowledge is employed in assay development.
  • Ensure that key personnel are recruited and retained.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining assay development and product specific state-of-the-art standards assay products.
  • Play a leadership role in the development process. Support product improvement and compliance related activities as needed.
  • Discovery: coach and mentor teams on ideation techniques, created problem solving, customer insights, and early phase technology development.  Establish KPIs for funnel health and innovation phase gate governance.
  • Delivery: Oversee the coordination and execution of critical projects, ensuring on time, on target, on budget, and predictable outcomes of new product development initiatives.  Establish KPIs in partnership with PMO and Technical Leads for each program in the portfolio.
  • Analyze operational and financial processes and recommend improvements for enhanced efficiency and effectiveness across the Global R&D sites, including best known method establishment and implementations in the areas of portfolio management, budgeting, design transfer, requirements and risk management, and design controls.

  • Provides direction for improvements to the Design Control policies and practices by maintaining and updating the Design Control Systems training function and subject matter.
  • Ensure through others that the Design Control policies and practices are consistently applied and are in compliance throughout the pre-production and post-market life of the product.
  • Manages performance of staff towards department and Company goals, including feedback on performance, appraisals, recommendations for merit increases or necessary disciplinary actions, communication to employees on performance, etc.
  • Understands and is aware of the quality consequences which may occur from the improper performance of their specific job; has awareness of device defects that may occur in their area of responsibility, including product design, verification and validation, manufacturing and testing activities
  • Responsible for exhibiting professional behavior with both internal/external business associates that reflects positively on the company and is consistent with the company’s policies and practices; build productive internal/external working relationships
  • Carries out duties in compliance with established business policies
  • Other duties as assigned, according to the changing needs of the business

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS | EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Advanced degree in a scientific discipline and significant experience (at least 8-10 years) in a product development or related role (i.e. R&D new product development, Technical Support of on-market products).
  • Thorough understanding of diagnostic platforms and technologies (biochemistry, PCR, etc.) and their application to disease state management.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of how diagnostic testing is used in the customer's laboratory and how physicians use diagnostic testing for treatment of disease is also desired but not required.

     

The base pay for this position is

$211,600.00 – $423,200.00

In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
