Desktop Engineer – Job Description

Role Overview:
The Desktop Engineer is responsible for providing end-user IT support, ensuring reliable workstation functionality, and assisting with basic infrastructure tasks. The role requires strong troubleshooting capabilities, hands-on experience in passive/active networking, ITSM processes, and foundational VMware knowledge to support Server and Network L3 teams.

Key Responsibilities

1. End-User Support

  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot desktops, laptops, and handheld devices.
  • Resolve OS, application, user account, printer, and peripheral issues.
  • Handle incidents, problems, and service requests using the ITSM platform (ServiceNow / ManageEngine / JIRA).
  • Ensure SLA compliance with proper documentation and ticket updates.

2. Networking – Passive & Active

  • Perform RJ45 crimping, patching, cable tracing, and structured cabling activities.
  • Manage rack patch panels, network points, and cable dressing.
  • Coordinate with Network L2/L3 teams for escalated issues.

3. Network Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose and resolve LAN/WAN issues, network drops, and connectivity failures.
  • Perform network port checks, VLAN assignments, and interface status verification.
  • Troubleshoot IP conflicts and general network performance issues.

4. Networking Knowledge

  • LAN / WAN fundamentals.
  • IP addressing and subnetting.
  • VLANs, trunk/access ports, STP basics.
  • DHCP / DNS understanding.
  • Basic firewall concepts (policies, rules, access).
  • Co-ordinate with firewall team for access or policy checks.

5. Basic VMware & Server Support

  • Basic understanding of VMware vSphere / ESXi environments.
  • Ability to:
    • Perform VM power on/off, resource checks, and basic health monitoring.
    • Check datastore availability and host connectivity (L1 checks).
    • Assist L3 Server or Network team with preliminary diagnostics.
  • Escalate critical issues with proper logs and observations.

6. Additional Responsibilities

  • Support IT onboarding activities for new users.
  • Maintain hardware inventory and asset management records.
  • Coordinate with external vendors for repairs and AMC services.
  • Maintain IT documentation, SOPs, and troubleshooting guides.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of experience in Desktop Support / IT Operations.
  • Strong L1 knowledge in passive and active networking.
  • Hands-on experience with ITSM tools and processes.
  • Basic understanding of VMware to support Server/Network teams.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work under pressure.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities.

Job Requirements – Desktop Engineer

  • Diploma / Bachelor’s degree in IT or related field.

  • 1–3 years of experience in Desktop Support / IT Operations.

  • Strong L1/L2 support skills for desktops, laptops, OS, applications, printers, and peripherals.

  • Hands-on, in-depth experience in passive and active networking, including structured cabling, RJ45 crimping, patching, cable tracing, rack/patch panel management, LAN/WAN troubleshooting, IP addressing, VLANs, port checks, and connectivity issue resolution.

  • Working experience with ITSM tools (ServiceNow / ManageEngine / JIRA) and SLA-based ticket handling.

  • Basic understanding of VMware / server environments to perform L1 checks and assist L2/L3 teams.

  • Good communication skills, strong troubleshooting ability, and capability to work under pressure.
