Summary of Job Duties:

This position provides support to the OR, performing Perioperative Autologous Cell Salvage. This position must be able to work a fluid schedule. This position involves an on-call rotation that will require the ability to report to the hospital within 30 minutes during call for emergency surgery/traumas.

• Collects patient’s blood through a suction tube into the Haemonetics Cell Saver Elite Reservoir. 
• Centrifuge and wash blood to be returned to the Anesthesiologist for reinfusion to the patient. This process will be repeated until the surgery is completed. 
• Collect a QC specimen on every procedure that blood is returned to the patient. 
• Take call once every 4th week (or the amount of weeks equal to trained techs) – 24 hours per day, or as needed. 
• Must keep the cell salvage cell phone with you at all times and answer all phone call immediately. If a call is missed it must be returned within 5 minutes. 
• Must clock in and out of cell salvage correctly for tracking of time and cost in the operating room.
• Required to report to UAMS OR within 30 minutes of receiving a call for services. 
• Required to stay on campus during inclement weather if on call.
• Must communicate all pertinent information to other cell saver techs and supervisor. 
• Ensure all policies and procedures are followed.
• Consult with supervisor, section manager, medical director and Haemonetics field service for guidance when handling problem situations. 
• Consult with supervisor, section manager or medical director for priority call when services needed outnumbers the amount of machines. 
• Assist with training new Cell Saver Technologist including signing off on competencies.
• Assist with maintaining cell saver stock.

• Receives specimens from all sources and verifies that specimens are properly collected and labeled. 
• Ensure test is received in the correct tube type. 
• Sorts all specimens and place them in the proper racks or bucket to be received. 
• Load racks on the appropriate automation line to be received in and tested. 
• Scan specimens into the EPIC system and re-label the specimens as needed. 
• Enter orders into EPIC through requisition entry for all outside institutions. 
• Process add-on test. 
• Answers phone calls concerning results, faxing reports, specimen collection and ordering test. 
• Process timed urine specimens. 
• Reconcile packing list. 
• Process Reference, VA and ACH specimens. 
• Process mail-in specimens. 
• Scan requisitions received with labs from institutional accounts into EPIC. 
• Call critical results as needed. 
• Fill out all Safety Intelligence reports and deliver to the Core Lab Manager.
