SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER, SENSORS (AVIONICS)

Our sensors development team works to design, test, and manufacture high-performance electronic sensors for the world's most advanced launch vehicles and spacecraft. The team is responsible for end-to-end development of application-specific sensor products to support critical rocket and spacecraft operations, systems, and control loops including propulsion, guidance, navigation, control, and environmental systems. The Mechanical Design Engineer, Sensors will work on this highly interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to design the mechanical aspects of sensors, conduct mechanical analysis across environments, and complete testing.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop innovative sensor designs and/or packages for physical sensors such as pressure, acceleration, rotation, flow, etc.
  • Build analytical and finite element thermal, structural, and fatigue models.
  • Create 3D models, production 2D drawings, and complete tolerance analysis.
  • Complete failure analysis of components as it relates to thermal loads, vibration, and shock
  • Interface with machine shops and production teams to ensure final designs can be produced following overall project goals

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering
  • 1+ years of hands-on experience designing and working with sensors, such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, pressure sensors, etc.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 3+ years of experience in the design of sensors or optics, packaging or integration of sensors or optical systems, or the design of mechanical and electrical systems
  • Working knowledge of fundamental sensing mechanisms
  • Experience packaging PCBs
  • Exposure to high volume production designs with a focus on design for manufacturability
  • Manufacturing processes including soldering, welding, wire bonding, and semiconductor fabrication.
  • Experience designing components for high temperature, high vibration environments
  • Experience with thermal and structural FEA
  • Knowledge of inspection processes and tools for mechanical components
  • Experience with NX and TeamCenter

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be willing to support extended hours and weekends when necessary to support launch and critical project timelines

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Pay Range:
Sensors Development Engineer/Level I: $100,000.00 - $120,000.00/per year
