Job Summary

The Principal Enterprise Steward & Semantic Layer Lead is the strategic expert focused on defining meaning, usage, and quality of enterprise data aligned with the Enterprise Data & Analytics Office. They work closely with business and IT teams to ensure the quality, integrity, and governance of data assets across the enterprise. This individual serves as a conduit between business strategy and technical execution, ensuring a “single source of truth” through modeling business concepts into a governed, consumable semantic layer.

Job Description

Key Accountabilities

Semantic Layer & Model Governance

Set the vision for enterprise ontologies and semantic models to unify business concepts across data domains and data products; ensure business contextual representations of data
Advise and/or develop enterprise semantic layer and business logic abstractions for analytics & AI readiness, collaborating with architects, business stakeholders and technical product and modeling teams
Ensure business rules and KPIs are identified and incorporated into the semantic layer

Data Governance

Manage new data initiatives and approved data use cases; prioritizing and defining requirements for data domains and key data elements with domain teams
Onboard, coordinates with and supports domain teams to ensure application of policies & standards; performs check-ins with domain teams  for ongoing domain sustainability efforts

Data Catalog

Define/Validate requirements for data elements and populate the enterprise data catalog
Review and refresh (as required) data lineage, and business and technical metadata

Data Quality

Define quality rules for data within domain
Oversee remediation of data quality issues in partnership with data stewards & custodians

Education, Experience, & Skill Requirements

12+ years minimum of progressive experience in data discipline such as data engineering, data governance, data architecture or a related area
Experience gained through college degree programs and/or certifications in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Management, Data Architecture & Design
Experience with semantic layer technologies (e.g., dbt, databricks), SQL, data dimensional modeling and BI tools
Demonstrated project management experience designing and implementing data and semantic layer governance initiatives in a management role 
Expertise in data management concepts, data governance frameworks, and data quality principles 
Experience with data catalog, data management and data quality tools (e.g., Alation catalog, Alation marketplace, Big Eye)
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; Ability to effectively and persuasively communicate standards, practices, and initiatives to drive data and semantic layer governance throughout the organization 
Ability to liaise with data owners, data stewards and data consumers on both business and technical levels, translating business requirements into technical requirements
Knowledge of data sources, transformation rules, and uses of data for the area of data stewardship
Experience in performance management metrics

Expertise in developing and managing metadata.
