Job Summary:

To provide and coordinate care for the eventual home placement for pediatric long term ventilator patients. To work in consult with the physicians and nursing staff to ensure proper family education, home environment, home health provider, and clinical follow-up after discharge.

Education & Experience

Associate's degree plus one (1) year of related experience or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:  MS State Board of Health Respiratory Therapy license, ACLS, or PALS or NRP required. Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties and responsibilities listed for a registered respiratory therapist.
  • Provides patient and family education specific to ventilator operation and airway management for the ventilated pediatric patient.
  • Develops and implements an individualized plan of action and discharge criteria.
  • Communicates with home health providers to ensure the home environment support after discharge.
  • Participates in the office visit follow-up after discharge.
  • Prepares and maintains records of all education materials.
  • Communicates and coordinates with UHC case management equipment needs and supplies to commercial, federal, and state insurers.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, frequent working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, frequent activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, frequent pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, occasional sitting, constant standing, constant twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
