Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

The Travelers’ Experience Design (XD) team creates best-in-class experiences for our customers, agents, employees, and partners and delivers tangible business impact. Travelers is looking for an Experience Design AVP – Design Strategy and Standards that will work as part of the XD leadership team to elevate the experience design practice. The ideal candidate will be both a proficient craftsperson, adept at steering collaborative teams to conceive and implement solutions that are beautiful and impactful, and an organizational master, able to create processes and standards that enable the design practice at large to be efficient and effective.

This person will be directly responsible for overseeing our Design Strategy and Facilitation Group. This team enables transformational efforts at the enterprise level and is composed of seasoned XD professionals. In close partnership with interdisciplinary leaders, you will lead workshops, analysis, and strategy sessions which empower our organization to deeply understand a particular focus point from a business, experience, and technology perspective, and then craft a compelling future vision that inspires and motivates the organization to live into it. The Design Strategy and Facilitation Group is dedicated to support end-to-end Customer, Agent and Employee Experience Journeys and other transformational efforts across the Travelers enterprise. The Experience Journeys and transformational efforts can focus on everything from discrete/ line of business areas to enterprise capabilities including entire digital ecosystems.

In this role you will be a key leader in maturing our Design Standards practice and supporting the advancement of our Design Ops practice. In partnership with the Head of Design and other key leaders you will help lead our organization into its next phase of maturity by setting and evolving design guidelines and systems, human-centric design standards and ensuring that our Travelers promise of taking care of our customers, our communities and each other is powerfully fulfilled in all experiences. This will focus on, amongst others, Design, Accessibility, Content, and UX Research and will collaborate with each business unit to implement those standards and enhance them.

This leader will continuously work to gain fresh insights and leverage them to drive strategic design direction. They persistently look for new design practices, customer and user trends, and marketing and brand insights to deliver optimized experiences.

The right person for this role will be a strategic leader, team player and skilled partner all rolled into one.

What Will You Do?

  • Serves as the key point of accountability for XD efforts at the portfolio level, covering multiple programs and projects.
  • Coaches, mentors and trains XD resources to successfully deliver on the end-to-end solution lifecycle (evaluation, analysis, generative/conceptual phases etc.,) for Experience Journeys and Enterprise Programs through the facilitation of workshops and strategy sessions.
  • A key leader in the strategic development and management of design standards and best practices ensuring they are deeply aligned with user needs and insights, while reinforcing brand values.
  • Partners closely with experts in design, content strategy, UX Research, and accessibility to ensure technical excellence is deeply embedded in our practices and delivery
  • Passionately and effectively advocates for user-centered design approaches, priorities and best practices. 
  • Regularly review and analyze the effectiveness of workshops and strategy sessions, using data and feedback to identify opportunities for process enhancements and to ensure target outcomes are achieved
  • Participates in the development of defined processes for XD from work intake, ideation, design, and experience quality assurance phases. 
  • Collaborates with peers to assess current and future resourcing needs, ensuring alignment with project goals and organizational priorities
  • Helps to recruit and grow a team of outstanding XD professionals by providing vision, coaching, and mentorship. 
  • Helps to create a dynamic team environment by fostering collaboration, experimentation, agility, and vigorous inquiry, while maintaining high expectations and attention to detail. 
  • Advocate for the necessary resources, including budget, tools, and training, to ensure the team can deliver high-quality work
  • Identifies research needs, usability testing efforts, and competitive research and analysis. Reports research findings to stakeholders. Translates these findings into value through delivery on recommendations. 
  • Typically manages vendor relationships for outsourced XD activities. 
  • Staff management functions include, but are not limited to, coaching, training, planning and performance management in a supportive, team oriented, collaborative manner. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.  

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Experience in a related field, such as HCI, VCD, Service Design, Anthropology, etc.
  • Fifteen years of related experience.
  • Five years of leadership experience (formal management or other).
  • Advanced knowledge of most areas, expert level knowledge and application of four or more, and the ability to teach others at an advanced level:

What is a Must Have?

  • Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in work experience.
  • Twelve years of related experience.
  • Five years managing others.
