Senior Manufacturing Test Engineering Advisor (Contract)

This position is an opportunity to work within the Manufacturing Test Engineering team for Lumentum’s Optical Switching division. The role is intended for an experienced individual contributor who will leverage deep technical expertise and prior manufacturing experience to support high-volume production of Optical Circuit Switch (OCS) products.

This is a senior advisory role focused on technical leadership, mentorship, and manufacturing oversight, with particular emphasis on contract manufacturing support and PCBA production. The successful candidate will act as a trusted technical authority and escalation point, working closely with internal teams and contract manufacturing partners to ensure robust, high-quality manufacturing outcomes.

In this role, you will provide technical leadership to teams responsible for automated test and calibration processes used in manufacturing assemblies and field-replaceable units (FRUs) for Lumentum’s latest generation of Optical Circuit Switches. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary group spanning manufacturing test, R&D, hardware, firmware, optics, and global operations to enable scalable, stable, and cost-effective production.

The work involves state-of-the-art technologies including Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), free-space optical assemblies, opto-electronic components, digital and analog electronics, and embedded software, all integrated to deliver advanced optical switching functionality. The team supports the product lifecycle from early development through full production, with automated calibration and test processes designed to maximize performance, yield valuable manufacturing data, and support continuous improvement.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with R&D teams to review, develop, and refine calibration and test plans that optimize product performance and ensure compliance with specifications
  • Serve as a senior technical interface to in-house Operations teams and contract manufacturing partners, providing oversight of PCBA production, test stability, yield, and quality
  • Act as a technical escalation point for complex manufacturing, yield, and test-related issues, leading root-cause analysis and driving effective corrective actions
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams through collaboration, design reviews, and hands-on problem solving Improve reliability, yield, throughput, and cost efficiency of manufacturing test processes while maintaining predictable and stable production quality
  • Analyze test data and production trends to identify systemic issues and enable data-driven continuous improvement across manufacturing and test operations

Skills and Experience

  • Extensive experience (typically 15+ years) in optical subsystems design and manufacturing
  • Post-secondary degree in a Science or Engineering discipline
  • Strong knowledge of optical communication principles and optical switching technologies
  • Deep understanding of analog and digital electronics, including schematic interpretation and debugging
  • Significant hands-on experience with PCBA manufacturing, test coverage, yield optimization, and failure analysis in a contract manufacturing environment
  • Proven ability to solve complex technical problems in high-volume, time-to-market-driven manufacturing settings
  • Experience working effectively across R&D, manufacturing, and global operations teams
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence without direct authority
