BMO Global Asset Management is seeking an experienced Portfolio Manager, Global Consumer Sector to join its Global Equity team. The successful candidate will be responsible for generating differentiated investment insights and managing capital within the Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors on a global basis. The role requires deep fundamental research capabilities, strong portfolio construction skills, and the ability to identify long-term secular winners and emerging investment opportunities across developed and emerging markets.

The Portfolio Manager will contribute directly to investment performance through security selection, sector allocation, risk management, and active participation in portfolio management discussions. The successful candidate will operate within a collaborative team environment while maintaining ownership over sector research and investment recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

Investment Research & Idea Generation

  • Develop and maintain deep expertise in the global Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors.
  • Conduct comprehensive fundamental research on companies, including:
    • Business model analysis
    • Competitive positioning
    • Industry structure
    • Management assessment
    • Capital allocation
    • ESG and responsible investment considerations
    • Financial modeling and valuation
  • Generate high-conviction, actionable investment recommendations supported by differentiated insights.
  • Identify secular growth opportunities and disruptive trends impacting global consumers.
  • Evaluate industry dynamics including:
    • Consumer behavior shifts
    • E-commerce penetration
    • Brand strength and pricing power
    • Supply chain developments
    • Demographic trends
    • Digital transformation

Portfolio Management

  • Manage sector exposures across global equity portfolios.
  • Construct and maintain concentrated portfolios while balancing risk and return objectives.
  • Assess position sizing, portfolio risk, liquidity, correlation impacts, and factor exposures.
  • Monitor portfolio holdings continuously and reassess investment theses as new information emerges.
  • Contribute to overall asset allocation and investment strategy discussions.
  • Collaborate with other sector portfolio managers and analysts to identify cross-sector investment opportunities.

Thought Leadership

  • Develop and communicate sector views to investment committees, clients, and distribution teams.
  • Produce written research reports and investment commentary.
  • Present investment recommendations with confidence and conviction.
  • Be recognized as a credible internal and external voice on consumer sector trends and opportunities.
  • Maintain awareness of macroeconomic, geopolitical, regulatory, and market developments that may influence sector performance.

Team Contribution

  • Mentor junior analysts and associate portfolio managers.
  • Foster collaboration across the Global Equity team.
  • Contribute to research process improvements and investment innovation.
  • Participate in client meetings, conferences, and industry events as required.
  • Support business development and marketing initiatives through investment expertise and client engagement.

Qualifications

Education & Credentials

  • Undergraduate degree in Finance, Economics, Commerce, Business, or related discipline.
  • CFA designation strongly preferred.
  • MBA or other advanced degree considered an asset.

Experience

  • 10+ years of relevant investment management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience covering Consumer Discretionary and/or Consumer Staples sectors.
  • Proven track record of successful investment recommendations and portfolio management decisions.
  • Experience managing institutional or retail investment portfolios preferred.
  • Strong understanding of global financial markets, capital markets, and portfolio construction.

Technical Skills

  • Advanced financial modeling and valuation expertise.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative capabilities.
  • Excellent understanding of portfolio risk management.
  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of information into actionable investment conclusions.

Salary:

$120,400.00 - $224,000.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
