Job Description Summary

A grinding specialist sets up, trouble shoots and repairs grinding machines as necessary. Set up grinder start to finish. Trouble shoot basic faults. Mechanical aptitude to make offsets to programs, gages, and chucks. Fix loader faults. Replace or change items such as loader arms, sensors, loading arm cylinders, bearings, etc. Ability to dress jibs and master gages off. Will cover for breaks for Grinding operators as needed and will train to those positions as well to be able to provide complete support. A Grinding Specialist is expected to be able to perform all of these operations for which they have received training.

3rd shift, 10 p.m. - 6 a.m. with training on 1st required, 6 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Job Description

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Set up grinder start to finish. 
  • Trouble shoot basic faults.
  • General machine maintenance on all grinding machines 
  • Mechanical aptitude to make offsets to programs, gages, and chucks. 
  • Fix loader faults. 
  • Replace or change items such as loader arms, sensors, loading arm cylinders, bearings, etc.
  • Ability to dress jibs and master gages off. 

Is familiar with and follows all work instructions that apply to the job as are a support provider to Grinding Operators and their job functions: 

  • Load/unload and run machine.
  • Makes necessary machine adjustments to maintain tolerance depending on specific machine operating instructions.
  • Unloads machine and stacks parts according to Process Sheet or shop criteria for material handling.
  • Tagging procedure for product, according to shop criteria 
  • Visual inspections and dimension checks according to process sheet, using the gages or measuring equipment specified.  Will also record and chart results according to process sheet.
  • Stops production and notifies Line Supervisor when nonconforming parts are found.
  • Tooling changes when excessive wear occurs and also at specified intervals. 
  • Follow line supervisor notification process when problems with machine operation occur.
  • Maintains a safe work area by performing general housekeeping duties in work area.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITIES WITHIN THE QUALITY SYSTEM:

Is familiar with and follows all Quality guidelines that apply to the job as are a support provider to Grinding Operators and their job functions: 

  • Release product to ship or to the next operation by following documented instructions.
  • Stop production for nonconforming or suspect product.
  • Identify and record problems.
  • Recommend solutions to problems through channels.
  • Regrade some product (as defined by documented instructions) during the course of production.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:    Machine shop environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Ability to stand throughout shift.  Manual dexterity required to load and adjust machine and measure parts.

TRAINING:  On the job training.

Required Skills and Education

EXPERIENCE:  At least 2-5 years grinding experience preferred, along with increasing level of mechanical aptitude/skill

SKILLS:    Mechanical aptitude and basic reading and math skills. Ability to read and follow work instructions, or ability to remember and follow the corresponding verbal work instructions.  Will take a mechanical aptitude test. 

High school diploma or GED preferred but not required.
