Position Summary

BASIC FUNCTION: The Financial Aid Counselor is responsible for supporting the day to day
operations of the Office of Financial Aid and providing excellent customer service to students.
The position requires excellent communication and organizational skills; knowledge of and
proficient with common PC software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and other
computer software and related computer and Internet technologies; ability to comprehend,
interpret, and apply federal and state regulations and institutional policies related to financial aid;
ability to regularly exercise professional judgment while ensuring confidentiality; and ability to
accurately, efficiently and effectively perform pertinent duties in such a fashion that the office
functions in a consistently smooth manner.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Communicate with students and their families, along with appropriate agencies, regarding
optimizing funding from federal, state, and institutional resources within the framework of
established regulations and policies
• Attains and maintains knowledge of major programs, and establishes administrative
procedures to ensure the proper processing and documentation of awards in accordance with
federal and state laws, regulations, and college policies
• Collaborate with Admissions Staff during recruitment season to meet enrollment goals
• When necessary, determines eligibility for, and awards, financial aid to students in
accordance with federal, state, and college laws, regulations, policies and/or guidelines
• Accurately perform verification of federal financial aid application data in accordance with
federal regulations
• Review electronic transmission of student assistance to student accounts
• When necessary, certifies students’ loan eligibility to lenders electronically and/or manually,
as applicable
• Develops goals and administrative procedures consistent with program guidelines,
departmental goals, and university objectives
• Assists with the coordination and conduction of entrance and exit loan-counseling sessions
• Process professional Judgments
• Participate in all Check-in and Admission Open House events as needed
• Exhibits effective customer service skills and team-building capabilities continuously
• As assigned, plans and presents financial aid workshops, seminars, etc., which may be
outside traditional office hours and/or out of town
• Improves service to students through refining and enhancing office operational procedures

• Disseminates information regarding financial aid programs, including loan, scholarship and
grant programs
• Counsels prospective and enrolled students on all aspects of financial aid, to include financial
management and budgeting practices as appropriate
• Develops effective working relationships with appropriate personnel in various campus
Departments
• Performs core daily tasks as assigned by supervisor or Director, e.g., resolve Pell multiple
reporting issues or transmission/receipt of electronic records from the Department of
Education’s Central Processing System, ELM, etc.
• Completes assigned goals, tasks, and projects in an accurate and timely manner
• Maintains punctual attendance in accordance with the defined office schedule, and/or as
assigned
