Introduction to team

Content group team owns products and services that handle large volumes of structured and unstructured data, in the form of text and media, converting it to content that helps travellers pick the best property, be it a hotel or a vacation rental. These are exciting times for this team as we are preparing our product lines for global expansion and laying the foundation for Expedia's future. We optimize signals to improve the display of accurate, relevant & personalized information for Property, Destination Content, Geography/Maps and Reviews. The Director would be joining the Content Reviews group, with a charter to help improve reviews collection rate for all VRBO and BEXH brands, Making sure Expedia helps our customers find the perfect place and wake up happy is an exciting mission for our technology teams. 

EG is seeking a Technology Director to work in a dynamic, agile environment. This role will have leadership, delivery, and technical responsibility for our Content Insights engineering group with teams across multiple locations focused on designing, implementing, and maintaining solutions related to helping our customers to shop and book lodging property.

These teams work primarily with Java and Kotlin based web services utilizing no SQL technologies such as Cassandra, Kafka and Redis. Components owned by these teams are either already fully integrated with our CI/CD pipeline or on their way to fully integrated with a strong focus on test automation.

In this role, you will:  

  • Identify the interrelatedness of work activities across teams and recommend improvements to processes to increase effectiveness.

  • Remove team barriers to implementing new ideas or approaches by securing the necessary resources or support from senior management.

  • Ensure process improvement initiatives focus on measurable results, and help teams establish measures of success.

  • Manage and lead the product development lifecycle to reduce time to market, improve product quality and ensure product success.

  • Partner with leaders across all EG to collaboratively solve problems.

  • Support and inform EG leaders via a community of practice and product reviews.

  • Build relationships with leaders across the organization to understand business problems and apply a technology lens to solve them.

  • Identify areas for improvement and develop innovative enhancements using available software development tools following design requirements of customer.

  • Advocate for designing software that is scalable, resilient and stable.

  • Make decisions on product technology direction based on deep subject matter knowledge.

  • You will be well versed/has up-to-date knowledge in EG's languages, frameworks, cloud services, toolkits, methodologies.

  • Exceed customers’ expectations by listening for unexpressed needs; connect customer needs to relevant service offerings and new technology.

  • Lead others in resolving technical issues in a timely manner; follow up with customers to ensure satisfaction.

  • Partner with the business to integrate new technologies into business solutions; create and communicate a vision of the technology requirements for the future state of the business.

  • Identify and mentor critical talent within subdivision.

  • Combine and share knowledge and skills in more than one functional area to promote efficiency in the department or business unit/function.

  • Place individuals in roles and assignments that stretch their capabilities and contribute to their personal and career development whilst facilitating cross-team and cross-divisional movement of talent as a tool for building skills, capabilities, and creating visibility to talent.

  • Identify team educational and training needs and develop programs or recruits’ specialists to meet those training needs.

Experience and qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree or master’s in a related Technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience.

  • Equivalent experience includes: Managed at least 2 people managers and executing capacity planning/allocation for a team size of 30+.

  • Built a strategy and driven a roadmap for a multi-product, cross functional program across multiple years.

  • Strong technical acumen which allows you to be responsible for several technical domains and choices recommended in a team and then implementation involving a number of technologies.

  • Presented new technology choice to technical and non-technical observers.

  • An expert in multiple domains.

  • Guide others to make well defined technical choices and are an expert in multiple domains.

  • Built strong teams by mentoring managers to empower team members. You have also mentored employees outside of your direct organization.

  •  Defined team goals to solve a business need across an entire business unit.

  • Delivered solutions to business problems spanning a business unit.

  • Collaborating closely with the product team you have delivered and influenced across multiple teams spanning a business unit.
