Job Description

In this role, you have the opportunity to improve people’s life through meaningful innovation

As the packaging engineer, you will manage the initial development of structural packaging. This will include working with marketing, internal business groups (Design, NPI, Quality, etc.), external suppliers, and the markets / sales organizations. In addition, responsibilities will be a part (packaging execution) of the product introduction process as well as portfolio improvement opportunities (MLD projects).

You are responsible for

  • Manage packaging execution projects with internal marketing, Philips design, purchasing, quality and external suppliers

  • Ensure packaging requirements are clearly defined and understood by external suppliers

  • Prioritizes packaging structure projects for new products and improvement projects for existing products

  • Balance workload to ensure timely launches within cross-functional team framework

  • Work with marketing and Philips Design to develop initial packaging concepts appropriate for each project

  • Work with external supplies to ensure packaging concepts optimized for manufacturing and cost constraints

  • Create design briefs for external design suppliers

  • Oversee packaging design process, ensuring designs meet Philips standards for customer attractiveness, structural quality and sustainability

  • Create specifications for product shipper box and palletization

  • Coordinate packaging quality testing per international shipping standards

  • Create package design drawings and specifications

  • Define and select material specification to meet cost constraints and sustainability guidelines

  • Determines logistics parameters for new packaging structures (e.g. weights, dims, material content)

  • As a packaging engineer, you will be a part of the core team of a new product development project. Throughout the project, you will frequently interact with the Project Manager, Marketing Manager, and Product Researcher, as well as a variety of technical subject matter experts both locally and internationally.

  • This position is part of the Oral Healthcare team and is based in the Philips Innovation Center in Shenzhen China.  This position should be capable of drive project execution on accelerating innovations through ODM/OEM partnerships external to Philips.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, packaging, science, or design engineering

  • 10+ years of design and/or manufacturing of paperboard and corrugate structures, thermoformed blister cards and clamshells, polybags

  • Working knowledge of: Esko ArtiosCAD, CAPE Pack,  Adobe Illustrator, Solidworks

  • Knowledge of ISTA protocols

  • Project management skills, including planning and organization skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite

  • Communication and presentation skills: documents data / decisions in a detailed and structured way, tailors ways to best present information to audience and presents complex technical data in a concise way

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with people globally and all levels of the organization

  • Fluent in Mandarin with good English (both writing and verbal) ability

  • Logical thinking and demonstrated competencies on handling multiple tasks.

  • The desire to work on projects that change people’s lives.

  • Critical eye to detail.

  • Curious and inventive attitude.


How we work together
We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office-based teams, this means working in-person at least 4 days per week.
Onsite roles require full-time presence in the company’s facilities.
Field roles are most effectively done outside of the company’s main facilities, generally at the customers’ or suppliers’ locations.
