About InterDigital

InterDigital is a global research and development company focused primarily on wireless, video, artificial intelligence (“AI”), and related technologies. We design and develop foundational technologies that enable connected, immersive experiences in a broad range of communications and entertainment products and services. We license our innovations worldwide to companies providing such products and services, including makers of wireless communications devices, consumer electronics, IoT devices, cars and other motor vehicles, and providers of cloud-based services such as video streaming. As a leader in wireless technology, our engineers have designed and developed a wide range of innovations that are used in wireless products and networks, from the earliest digital cellular systems to 5G and today’s most advanced Wi-Fi technologies. We are also a leader in video processing and video encoding/decoding technology, with a significant AI research effort that intersects with both wireless and video technologies. Founded in 1972, InterDigital is listed on Nasdaq.

Summary

This two-months internship will focus on the implementation and evaluation of a novel probabilistic haptic coding approach within the MPEG haptics standard (ISO/IEC 23090-31).

The current MPEG haptic format enables deterministic rendering of haptic effects. InterDigital has proposed an extension introducing probabilistic haptic representations. The objective of the internship is to extend the MPEG reference software (C++) to support probabilistic representations of haptic, enabling controlled variability at rendering time. In addition to the implementation work, the intern will evaluate the proposal through objective analysis and a small-scale user study.

The internship may lead to software modules, internal demonstrators, and potentially a publication and/or patent contribution.

Responsibilities

The intern will join the haptics research team within the New Media Codec group at InterDigital (Rennes). The work will consist in:

  • Implementing probabilistic extensions in the MPEG Haptic reference software (C++)

  • Developing test content and validation tools

  • Designing and conducting a user study to assess perceptual impact

  • Contributing to technical documentation and potential publication/patent drafting

Qualifications

  • Master’s student (or 4th year engineering school) in Computer Science, Signal Processing, Robotics, or related field

  • Strong C++ programming skills

  • Knowledge of signal processing and probability/statistics

Nice to have:

  • Experience with user studies

  • Familiarity with multimedia standards (MPEG)

  • Basic knowledge of haptics or interactive systems

Keywords: Haptics, MPEG, C++, Signal Processing, Probabilistic Modeling

Expected Outcomes: Software modules, potentially demos and potentially patents
