Patient Safety Monitors are responsible for watching patients and observing behaviors that need to be escalated to the nurse. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

A Brief Overview
Patient Safety Monitors are responsible for watching patients and observing behaviors that need to be escalated to the nurse. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.


What you will do

  • Continuous observation of the patient at all times (eating, using the restroom, etc.).
  • Accompanying patients off unit alongside nurses or other licensed clinical personnel (never alone).
  • Engage verbally with the patient to redirect unwanted behaviors. Inform care team of non-compliant behavior for documentation.
  • Never leave the patient unattended. Undivided attention must be given to patients at all times.
  • Use appropriate communication method when assistance is needed for either a break or to report changes of patient behavior to the nurse. (i.e. call light, alert alarms, etc.)

Work Experience Requirements

  • Required - No prior work experience
  • Preferred - Experience in a healthcare setting


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read, write, and understand verbal or written instructions
  • Ability to communicate verbally with others
  • Ability to maintain working relationships with co-workers
  • Ability to organize and complete tasks
  • Ability to work with age specific populations including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients
  • Ability to effectively respond to safety protocols


Supervision Provided by this Position

  • There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position.


Physical Demands

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
  • Periodic exposure to excessive heat and cold throughout shift; Occasional work to be performed outdoors when discharging patients.
