GEICO is seeking a Distinguished Platform Engineer to help guide the development of our database platform.  This platform will enable our customers to self-serve integrations for PostgreSQL, Cassandra and other open source offerings.  You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Position Responsibilities 

As a Distinguished Engineer, you will: 

  • Develop and execute the technical software development strategy for persistent storage, specifically relational storage in PostgreSQL and noSQL storage in Cassandra 

  • Architect for security while maintaining a good developer experience  

  • Be accountable for the quality, usability, and performance of the solutions 

  • Utilize modern programming languages like Go and Python 

  • Be well-versed with relational database design and operation 

  • Be intimately familiar with Kubernetes running in an enterprise environment 

  • Understanding of operating PostgreSQL and/or Cassandra on Kubernetes 

  • Build and operate containerized database workloads at scale 

  • Mentor and coach existing engineers 

  • Influence and educate leadership at all levels 

  • Consistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teams 

 

Qualifications 

  • ​​You are customer-centric, always keeping the customer’s experience at the forefront of the conversation 

  • You are transparent and decisiveYou have a prejudice for action and an iterative approach to software 

  • You learn from your mistakes and pass the knowledge on to others 

  • Fluency and expertise in PostgreSQL and/or Cassandra 

  • Experience building products in a micro-services-oriented architecture 

  • ​​Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code 

  • Fluency in DevOps concepts, cloud architecture, CI/CD frameworks (Github Actions, et al) 

  • Experience with application monitoring tools and performance assessments 

  • In-depth knowledge of data structures and algorithms 

  • Experience with solving analytical problems with quantitative approaches 

  • Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, operations, real-time communication) 

  • Exemplary ability to design, perform experiments, and influence engineering direction and product roadmap 

  • Experience partnering with engineering teams and transferring research to production 

  • Proficient in HA database architecture and tools 

 

Experience 

  • ​​12+ years of professional experience in software development with relational database systems 

  • 10+ years of experience with architecture and design 

  • 6+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service 

  • 6+ years of experience in open-source frameworks 

 

Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience

Annual Salary

$130,000.00 - $300,500.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
