JOB SUMMARY:

Organizes, directs, and performs activities related to instrumentation, sterilization, and supplies utilized for patient care in the Operating Room. Assists RNs as directed in providing patient care. Has a working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies.


JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

I. Clinical Standards
• Department Responsibilities - Fulfills routine duties independently to include daily stocking,
weekly terminal cleaning, cleaning of autoclave, daily refrigerator and fluid warmer temp
checks, maintaining unit cleanliness, etc.; Seeks direction when indicated for unusual or
non-routine duties. Advises appropriate personnel of situations requiring intervention or
follow-up, observing lines of communication appropriate to the situation.
• Reprocessing/sterilization
• Hospital Wide Quality Metrics:
o Inpatient Satisfaction “Likelihood to Recommend" (Non-nursing department use house
wide score; Nursing units use department specific score)
o NRC: Ambulatory Surgery - Departments use specific results (OPS, GI, Cath, and IR)
o NRC: Individual Department results
• Quality Measurement: Did staff wash their hands?
• Stewardship- Cost Center actual expenses in comparison to flex budget

II. Professional Development
• Staff Meeting Attendance
• Professional Growth and Development

III. Patient Safety and Quality Outcomes (NDNQI quality data – Units that do not monitor
specific indicators will use the hospital wide scoring for the year)
- Performance/Evaluation Criteria: Below 25th percentile, Below the mean, Below the 50th
percentile, above the 75th percentile, or Above the 90th percentile
• Falls with Injury
• Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcer
• Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI)
• Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI)


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must be a graduate of accredited Surgical Technology Program. Certification required.


REQUIRED LICENSURES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:

• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) administered by National Board of Surgical
Technology & Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Maintain current CPR certification


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Demonstrates technical competence and adherence to hospital policy. Adopts the organizational culture and maintains fiscal responsibility within the department. Adheres to clinical standards and practice guidelines set forth by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN).


INTERACTION WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS:

This position requires close interaction with other ancillary departments in order to facilitate a quality multidisciplinary approach to patient care.


PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES:

Work is of medium demand; walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting of patients with assistance is required. Talking and hearing is essential in instructing and supervising nursing personnel and in receiving doctor's orders and patient's condition reports. Near visual acuity required to work with charts and records and to observe patients.


ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:

The area where work is performed is high-risk for exposure to the blood borne pathogens. Works in a well- lighted heated and ventilated building. Hours may vary to accommodate needs in the department as prescribed by the philosophy of the hospital.
