JOB PURPOSE: Serves as an Onboard Specialist in Mining Technology industry. This role serves as an expert of the MineStar on-board autonomous truck technology as well as the onboard terrain and fleet technology. Leverages on/off-board network know-how, understands interactions with base truck layer, understand the operations of key autonomy components (LiDAR, ECM, PCS, IMU, HP receiver). Understands impact of technology induced health events on mining operations and processes. Leverages mining technology application knowledge to improve mining operations, process, change management, increase customer loyalty, and improve sales force effectiveness. This position supports new implementations and ongoing operations for MineStar Command for Hauling. The Onboard Specialist is assigned to a mine site and reports the operation and system performance to a Technology Site Manager assigned to the same operation. Also supplies recommendations back through the Product Development group to influence future product development. This position will influence market requirements, trends, and key areas for product improvement.

Job Duties: Include the following functional areas:

  • Drive customer recognition of value of Command for Hauling, product feature design, improved processes, and change management.

  • Provides technical expertise related to Caterpillar MineStar Technology products, mainly focused on the on-board autonomous technology.

  • Provide operational support to the Autonomous Trucks operation.

  • Support customers and local Caterpillar Dealers by providing basic product application expertise.

  • Consults with site on basic features and processes are in place to support mining technology.

  • Benchmarks site performance using several maintenance metrics to ensure continuous improvement on Autonomous truck availability and reliability.

  • Recommends MineStar and Mining Equipment Management Best Practices.

  • Support customers and local Caterpillar Dealers through the change management process.

  • Supports basic training of Caterpillar Dealers personnel in areas of expertise.

• Provides feedback to product feature/benefits.

• Participate in Field Follows as needed.

INCREASE / SHARE Technology INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE

Increase application expertise and transfer knowledge to others within Caterpillar. 

• Identify and document performance issues based on field observation working with customers and Caterpillar Dealers.

• Serves as team members to establish best practices and knowledge share.

• Publish knowledge profiles for review by other specialists as a form of internal training and knowledge transfer.

INCREASE AWARENESS & PRESENCE OF CATERPILLAR in the Mining Technology INDUSTRY

Improve the industry’s perception of Caterpillar. 

• Serve as a basic application specialist to customers and dealers.

Individuals in this position must understand and keep current in mining technology. They must have excellent problem solving and analysis ability to determine the correct direction to solve technical and process issues.  They will recommend improvements to People, Process, and their Technology.  Incumbents will apply their knowledge of the product, technology, and industry to support Caterpillar, dealer, and customer goals.

Incumbents, along with their manager, will direct their development and continual learning through experience and staying abreast of technology changes.  Key learning comes from continued experience at customer sites.  They will provide excellent communication and build solid relationships with the customer, dealer, and Caterpillar.

Incumbents must stay abreast of industry and technology changes and relate those changes to Caterpillar, dealer and customer needs.

Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.

Field Support: Knowledge of and experience with providing post-sales support; ability to support maintenance of hardware products.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree: Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic or Mechatronic Engineering (desired).

  • Working background in Mining Heavy Equipment Maintenance.

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience within Mining Industry or Mining Technology (Systems and Practices)

  • Intermediate English

Top Candidates will have:

  • Basic knowledge on high precision positioning systems (GNSS) and Network Communications.

  • Experience on Caterpillar MineStar Command for Hauling on-board technology or similar.

  • Driver License

  • Advanced English

  • Knowledge in data analytics and experience in data base reporting (ex. SQL, SAP BO, PowerBI)
