About the Role

The Dark Web/Cryptocurrency Analyst will provide high-level expertise in Dark Web, Cryptocurrency, and cyber-security practices. Practical knowledge in blockchain analysis is also required for the position. The Dark Web Analyst supports the program agnostic Analytics Group within National Headquarters and conducts open-source analysis to identify and develop intelligence on targets operating on the clear and dark webs for all Inspection Service investigations. The analyst provides actionable intelligence through cryptocurrency tracking and analysis, open source and dark web intelligence and social media analysis, geospatial mapping and data visualization, and USPS backend and network data exploitation.

What you will do: 

Intelligence Gathering and Assessment

  • Evaluate Internet information from social media, chats, forums, dark net, TOR network, news feeds, internet relay chats and other sources of data
  • Use Open-Source Internet Analyst Tools to provide guidance and insight on online businesses, various marketplaces, and forums where cyber-criminals and crimes are conducted
  • Use intelligence tools and software to identify bitcoins, locations, accounts, services, travels, email addresses, IP addresses and other pattern of life data

Data Analysis and Collection

  • Research contemporary online fraud methodologies and prevention strategies to identify and counter criminal trends and potential weaknesses within the online services of the Postal Service. 
  • Conduct analysis and research to report results using tabular, pictorial or graphical techniques.
  • Utilize experience in visual tools as Qlik, Microstrategy, Tableau and/or i2 Analyst Notebook
  • Interpret gathered data, find patterns and trends in the analyzed data, and create reports from systems such as a USPS security information and event manager (SIEM) and Office 365 apps. 

Investigation and Report

  • Develop sources for and identify data attributable to online criminal activity. Manage lists to block accounts, IP addresses, and other user-specific or session specific information to protect USPS online systems.  
  • Develop and research information intelligence for criminal investigations prompted by activity identified against Postal Service online systems using pertinent usps.com data, existing USPIS information and intelligence from third-party entities such as other corporate or government victims, Lexis-Nexis and law enforcement databases.   
  • Use technology solutions to actively search, analyze, and prioritize the various marketplaces and cyber-criminals to identify high value targets in response to USPIS investigations
  • Conduct blockchain analysis, trace the flow of funds, and complete comprehensive reports

Minimum Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, and or demonstrated relevant work experience in Cyber, Dark Web, and cryptoanalysis and environment.
  • 3+ years’ experience with open-source (OSINT) methodologies to conduct blockchain analysis, trace the flow of funds, and complete comprehensive reports
  • 3+ years’ experience working with current dark web and general web research methodologies.
  • Preferred experience with identifying and analyzing Virtual Currency or Cryptocurrency transactions through dark web sources
  • Demonstrated experience in such visual tools as Qlik, Microstrategy, Tableau and/or i2 Analyst Notebook
  • Demonstrated ability to compile data; identify potential financial losses and risks, fraudulent activities, and suspicious transactions, in order to assist in the criminal prosecution aspect of cyber related investigations
  • Ability to provide support for a variety of USPIS business initiatives, identity theft, stock fraud, pharmaceutical fraud, and other electronic criminal investigations.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing sufficient to express thoughts and ideas to diverse audiences
