Summary

As a Sr. Software Engineer (Applications) Join our world-class team of engineers solving today’s toughest robotics challenges. AeroVironment’s Tomahawk product line integrates land, air, and sea robotic capabilities to provide next-generation interoperability and control to the US and other allied militaries. We also create the hardware to link these robotic assets together, allowing comprehensive battlefield cognition for our frontline soldiers.

As a senior software engineer at AeroVironment, you will be creating software and hardware to control some of the most exciting new robotics platforms from AeroVironment and other companies. You will help us create the battlefield network and smart hub software to link these next generation robotics platforms together, bringing about a connected robotic-enabled battlefield.

Position Responsibilities

  • Build up embedded Linux applications to control complex networked environments.
  • Develop web-based UI to support soldier created networks on the battlefield.
  • Work with program and engineering leadership to help understand requirements and influence design, analysis, and testing to ensure robust application reliability.
  • Work with cross-IPT disciplines such as Systems, Electrical, Hardware, and Test Engineering to align hardware and software goals.
  • Operate in a continuous learning environment and provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers.
  • Understands the requirements and process. Participates in and leads software design reviews.
  • Creates software design documentation according to software process requirements
  • Implements coding according to coding standard. Writes a unique test, and validate software according to the process. Contributes to process improvement efforts
  • Delivers work on time according to agreed completion dates and project schedule & budget
  • Supports and derives algorithm design from detailed software requirements
  • Works closely with multiple teams of software developers reusing developed software to support different programs
  • Operates in a continuous learning environment and provides guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers
  • Demonstrates methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate activities of other personnel (Team Lead)
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or any other relevant field is required.
  • Minimum 8 - 12 years of relevant experience in Windows and Linux software development.
  • Experience with Linux application development.
  • Expertise in the following: C++ and Python.
  • Strong experience with containerization technologies (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with developing web applications.
  • Understands lower level networking concepts, including the OSI model, socket programming, and network debugging.
  • Willingness to travel locally (Occasionally)

Other Qualifications & Desired Competencies

  • Advanced degree in relevant field is preferred.
  • Understanding of DHCP, IPv4, IPv6, Linux bridges, network stack internals.
  • Experience with Python-based web frameworks like Flask and FastAPI.
  • Experience with communicating to and controlling UAS, drones, or robotics is preferred.
  • Must be able to obtain and hold a U.S security clearance.
  • Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions
  • Demonstrates effective listening, questioning, clarifying and summarizing skills to effectively communicate in one-on-one and small group settings
  • Demonstrates understanding of system design that one is working on and understands the role that assigned tasks play in the system
  • Able to excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, where small teams share a broad variety of duties
  • Displays strong initiative and drive to accomplish goals and meet company objectives
  • Takes ownership and responsibility for current and past work products
